The Samsung N181 and A591 have USB support for MAC OS9 Upwards(?). It is only a matter of time before Samsung or Nokia bring out a bluetooth CDMA handset to this part of the market. Samsung already have a Bluetooth CDMA handset, but not down here.

I have just experienced -another- dropped call on my Nokia 7650. Grrrr.

Anyway, back on topic, a Telecom Mobile sales rep was recently telling me that they are expecting to release around 30 new phones in the second half of this year. The Nokia 2280 and 3585 are just the start of a big bunch of new handsets. That means that bluetooth enabled CDMA handsets should be widely available by the end of the year.

With regards to connecting my phone to my Mac, I need someone that will work natively with OSX. However, I have just found a driver for the Kyocera 2235 USB interface. I will have to look into this further, because Telecom's data rates are now very similar to Vodafone's, but obviously their data rates are much faster.

Hi,

This is a nice phone, I am not sure if it can/will be ported for English/ local CDMA Networks
Taniwha, One phone I saw was
http://www.3gtoday.com/devices/devices/device1566.html

Would be good to see that sort of phone in the local market.
Telecom said that have Bluetooth phone's in the pipeline, also other handsets that are technology equivalent to GSM handsets.
I have just got a Nokia 3586, nice phone, and colour screen but no Bluetooth.

Nokia and Kyocera are going to do a hard push in the CDMA markets in Aus and NZ

I've heard the same, there will be a BIG ramp up on the amount of available Nokia CDMA handsets, even ones equivalent to GSM handset features.

yeah, i've heard of a few of the new ones, but not sure if i'm allowed to tell you about them. :-(

regards the RUIM comment i made, earlier there are some phones arriving with this, but it seems that, unlike GSM, you don't actaully need the card for the phone to function. the RUIM is an added feature, the phone has a hex id on it's own so doesn't need the RUIM. so it's my guess on my part that telecom probably won't be using it

i know portables.co.nz - GREAT store!! I have bought a few gadgets there..

fo the new phones i've had a play with, they all seem to fit in the the same category as existing ones. They are made by companies that have only recently started making cellphones (nokia being hte only exception), and while they have some new things like colour and cameras, the software is buggy and they are missing key features.
for example, you can take photos, and you can view the photos, but youcan't do anything with the phots - you can't get the damn photos out of the phone. no irda, no BT,. you can't even email or sms them out...

CDMA still sucks (IMHO).

alasta: To my knowledge Kyocera still only has drivers for Mac OS-9, however APT (who I work for) does a 3rd party cable that does have drivers for Mac OS-X aswell.

Good old portables : )

In regards to phones and camera's That sounds like the Gtran phone...They have been talking about adding MMS to the Handset but from what I understand that it will not have MMS until the next GTRAN handset model comes out late this year, early next. I was playing with a gtran phone during PTC, not bad. I would own one. Nice screen and easy to use

You could take photos, view them the whole works...but no MMS...Damm.

yip, gtran is a good example of CDMA makers not gquite getting it right.

still, the phone's supposed to be about 1/2 the price of any colour GSM, but probably 1/2 as useful.
it look like a nice phone, until you have to use it day to day...
if it had bluetooth, even buggy bluetooth.. then it would be perfect.
heck, i'd settle for IR.

Hi taniwha, as I work for APT who is the New Zealand distributor for GTRAN I would be interested in hearing some information about things 'not quite right' with GTRAN products.

If you could elaborate on the problems there is a good chance they can be resolved.

Thank you.

Hi,

It is a bit of a shame; the Gtran is a great phone. Like I said I have used it and like it. The new firm wear that came out, was ten times better than the first, and very easy to use. The phone it self I could not fault. The only things I would of liked to see would of been MMS, IR, or Bluetooth.

It is a shame that there are a lot of GPRS Bluetooth devices on the market, and then CDMA 1X which is a real and fast wireless data network has largely no options for connection to devices other than cables. It is a bit like the nokia 6385, it had IR, 1X RTT, but no Bluetooth. The unit still sold for more then the GSM/GPRS 6310 with Bluetooth.

But that’s life!

Cheers
