From What I have been told, If the TDMA gear fails (025) they assess the impact it might have. if it's just capacity which now is not really being utilized and coverage is not really an issue. or if there are very few users on a standalone area like a road, they just remove it for parts.
The other factor coming in to play is that the standard end of life phones, (the famous 5120's) are all finally packing up (batteries) and people just buy new phones. So no doublt as the users wane, the removal of the gear will happen sooner rather than later. Rumour has it, it will be donated/cheaply sold to Samoa.
I have somewhere on my messy hard drive, a picture of some 027 gear alongside some 025 gear. the 027 looks like a PABX, whereas the 025 is like a large chest freezer in size.
It's like comparing a Crossbar (electromechanical IE relays etc) PSTN with a RLU. (digital).
Telecom have the same problem with their old exchanges, The NEC 61 K,M,S.
The parts for these are very very hard to come across now. 025 is so dead and old now they will be glad to be rid of it. 025 in a fringe coverage is terrible. it's either crackling like nuts or buzzing at the poor called party like a fly after being attacked by raid.
Agreed on all points. The Samoa thing sounds right. I got about 50 Nokia 6120's 10 months ago that were earmarked for Telecom Samoa (all brand new in box), so Im pretty sure that thats Telecoms 'pro bono' project...
