Sort of ... I'm also wondering if a Bluetooth handset connected to a 'dumb' (SIMless) mobile set to wifi calling could be used to dialout via wifi?

When I had a landline, I used to own a Uniden XDECT8315 Bluetooth Cordless Phone that could make and receive calls via the mobile phone. I hardly used that feature so unsure if the cordless handset itself made the bluetooth connection to the mobile phone or if the Uniden's base unit made that connection.

I've not heard of a "SIMless" mobile, but I have also been known to live under a rock at times.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

@Rickles What is a SIMless mobile? A mobile handset has to have a SIM card or eSIM

A SIMless mobile would be a cordless phone and last time I check cordless phones don't support Wi-Fi calling and can't connect to a mobile phone network

OK, OK, so I got a little confusing, may I start again?

When I get rid of VoIP, I'd still like the convenience of a typical/classic/old handset for the desktop (physical, not PC) ... and there one or two phone handsets that will do this, and in fact connect via Bluetooth to the (primary) mobile phone. Some will allow connection to 3 or 4 different mobiles.

What I am wondering is if any of these handsets can have an App such as WhatsApp installed and utilised direct (via the caller & recipient's numbers same as if using just the mobile).

If that works, then wondered if a spare mobile without a SIM card in it could also connect to the Bluetooth handset and make WhatsApp calls.

Dial out to where??,

To make wifi calling work you have to get "in" to the phone network,

For that you typically need a device connected to the "phone" network, Either an active mobile, or a VOIP service of some variety...

OK, thanks all, I see where I'm going wrong 😬 re wifi calling.

However, using, for example, What'sApp, and an internet connection should still work using the ste up I described?

Unless you know of something special, don't think you can do what you want with the yealink phones either.

What's the model you are basing this off.

All the ones on the likes of PB are not just an extension of a mobile by simply pairing it.

They're VOIP phones, or IP telephony. Or bases that you can add other Bluetooth devices to for remote mic/speaker

If you're ditching VoIP you're left with mobile network. End. You will need a SIM in a desk form factor phone or mobile. Or some sort of temu device that is just a pair of Bluetooth headphones in a desk phone format you can pair to be the mic and speaker via Bluetooth from the Mobile. The mobile does the app work like you have Samsung buds in your ear but holding a handset.

Even the DECT phones are SIP - need a VoIP endpoint/provider.

The Uniden 8315, for example, says it can pair up to 4 mobile phones. One of the reviews says " makes it much more comfortable taking cell phone calls while at home".

Gives impression that the handset would do much that the mobiler itself would do (for calls at least)

That's more or less what I would call a portable handset. Not a desk phone.

Other than that the main line in the description for the features in the manual is, treat your mobile phone as a 2nd line to make and receive calls on your mobile number.

Primary function. POTS(voip) over cable. Secondary, Bluetooth handset audio extension for a mobile.

Less functional other than something not as flat as your mobile. But sure.

That should answer your other questions. Its not quite a speaker/mic but seems dedicated to mobile call function. And don't see how it would work for the other apps.
