The NextG version which I bought from Mobicity for use on Telecom's XT network cost me $NZ824 all up including international courier and Westpac foreign exchange fees. That was last week when they were selling them for $AUS599. I went to Mobicity as none of the NZ parallel importers could supply and all currently sell only the 900/2100 version.

Not a matter of short supply. People mostly use 900/2100 .hardly anyone uses 850mhz

Itsnormal actually for 850mhz to be more expensive

I think Ninjabear might be getting a bit off topic as the point of this thread was to confirm whether the Nokia 5800 can be used on Telecom's XT network and if so, which version to buy. Incidentally, UMTS 850 networks and 3G phones that support this band are becoming increasingly more common as the USA is a huge market and it sure helps us here in NZ that Telstra operate Australia's largest 3G network (NextG) on 850Mhz. The following link makes interesting reading.

Anyway good luck carter323 with your NextG compatible 5800 purchase from Mobicity (or whereever). They are really cool phones!

Sure imported phones will work but you'll have trouble using VF live or whatever XT's version of that will be. All of those settings are ingrained at time of distribution.

Like gedf said.

And, Telecom NZ has licenced from the government 850 and 2100 frequencies. So both 850/2100 will be in use.

So, sooner or later your mobile phone will have 2100 network coverage and not 850 network coverage (and visa versa, or neither sometimes, or possibly both in some scenarios).

Because of this you should target a device which supports 850, but preferably both 850 and 2100.

Well that kinda sucks, I grabbed myself a Nokia 8500d-1 while in Thailand.
Even so, I have to say the Vodafone network looks better for me atm anyways, which sucks a little worse because I coulda saved myself $70 NZD on the cell if I signed a 2 year plan. But in my advantage, I can take this cell to Europe, and use the pre-pay sims I have collected from over there with it.

Guess I am changing to Vodafone afterall, my gf will be stoked!

Not really . He says that he's having problem finding one and the next post was the world wide shortage.

USA market isn't as huge as the worldwide market where most market are mainly on 900/2100

Other than USA I don't see any place you can get hold of a 850MHZ 5800

Seriously, I'd hardly call things live VF live as something to worry about missing... I consider it a bonus that you don't have to put up with poor VF/Telecom firmwares...

Me neither. I haven't used VF live for 5 years now. There's isn't anything to offer on VF Live.

I rather have a mobile that is unbranded with a generic firmware.

I wonder what telecom's firmware look like
