OK. So the headset does manage to stop the Harrier bluetooth from cycling. So I guess a different headset is probably what I need.

Jarma has changed my ring time to 30 seconds now, and that does give it enough time to reconnect and for me to answer. Thanks, Jarma.

So, I need to see if I can obtain headset number 4.

Latest update. The Telecom reseller recomended and has provided a Sony Ericcson HBH-600.

But unfortunately it doesn't work either. It too disconnects.

Here are the headsets I have tried:
?? the first one I tried but I can't remember the model ??
Hello II
Bluetrek G2
Sony Ericsson Akono HBH-600
Motorola HS810 (borrowed)

All of them disconnect when the phone goes into sleep mode.

I've been using the Hello II and it gives a beep when it disconnects. So I can now surmise that the headset disconnects about 3-5 seconds after it goes into sleep mode.

So the bluetooth cycle (blue/grey/blue), is probably occurring because the headset is not connected, and is not actually causing the disconnect. I think the disconnect has already occurred at sleep time.

This lines up with riahon's experiment. When the headset is connected, he gets no blue/grey/blue, but when it is manually disconnected he does get the blue/grey/blue. So the blue/grey/blue may be just a standard cycle that the harrier does when it starts up so long as there are no headsets connected (perhaps).

For now I still have the 30 second ring time so I get most calls as I wait for the headset to connect each time. So as long as the people calling can wait. But I would love to have a headset that was connected throughout the day.

Has anyone else tried a bt headset on a harrier?

In my reckoning, the problem is not with the headset but with the Harrier, so all headsets will have the same problem. The Bluetooth appears to switch off when the unit is in Standby mode. Perhaps the headsets that appear to work are merely quicker at picking up the signal when the Harrier comes out of standby? Does anyone know if there is a reason the BT can't be left running while in standby? The phone is still live while in standby, so why not leave the BT live as well? Surely it is only a matter of altering a little bit of code.

Still puzzles me this.

Without turning on the headset, just turn bluetooth on the harrier. Then test it to see if BT disconnects (ie blue/grey/blue).

Mine does

But when I pair it with the headset, it stays connected throughout, even after coming out of sleep mode.

Could it mean that there is a setting in the 'pairing' part of the harrier that causes it to disconnect when in sleep mode.

Although I haven't tested this myself - simply because I use the Harrier for data only, I will throw in my NZ$0.02...

Perhaps this is happening with a devices using the Headset profile, and the other behaviour (the good one) is with devices using the Handsfree profile?

As I said I haven't tested this myself, but I have a couple of handsfree compatible headsets at home... I might spend some time this weekend playing with this - if I have enough time left that is.

I have a Logitech headset and an HCB-300 hands free unit in the car. Both look like Hands Free connections in the BT manager. Both disconnect as soon as the Harrier goes into standby mode. I'm not sure if I can change the connection type to Headset profile but I'll have another play later.

NeoTech, I believe the BT does stay on when in standby mode. The blue light keeps flashing, and if you are on a call it stays connected when it goes into standby. It just seems that when it is not in a call, the headset drops out.

Riahon's headset stays connected even when not in a call, so hard to say if it is BT software or headset.

Riahon, I can't find any other settings or pairing options.

Mauricio, I'm not sure what you mean by a profile. The BT profiles, as I understand them, relate to allowing multiple users to use the same device. In terms of services, mine is set up as Handsfree. I don't have a Headset service.

Here is a weird thing to throw into the mix. Today, for several hours, the BT headset stayed connected even when in standby mode. When I switched on (or received a call) it was still connected and I got no blue/grey/blue. So for a few hours today it worked the same as Riahon's.

Now is that the power of Geekzone (like the Twilight zone) or what? :-)

If only I could think of what I did differently....

Andrew.

Not quite. Profiles define use cases for Bluetooth devices. A profile define how devices will interact to achieve something. Profiles define the protocols used for example when a computer wants to connect to another one to transfer a file, or what the protocol used when a computer connects to a mobile phone to use it as a dial-up modem.

Check this article and then this one.

Today, I tried just about every different way of connecting to try and simulate whatever caused things to work yesterday, but unfortunately, it is back to disconnecting each time. The fact that it worked yesterday just makes it all the more annoying (but I now know there has to be an answer).

Mauricio, thanks for the info on profiles. The reason for my confusion was that the term "profile" is also used in the Bluetooth application settings screen but it seems to be a way of grouping the available bt profiles on your device.
