Are you on the XT network? If so obviously you have had no problems with the way it connects to the network. Where did you get this phone?

No - I'm with VFNZ.

I got mine at a parallel importer out South Auckland way - paid about $500 for it from memory. They're much cheaper now and still feature-packed.

It has far better reception than any of my previous phones but that could be down to the Vodafone Extended 3G network upgrades more than anything.

I have all but made up my mind that the 5800 is the way to go. I see no reason why it shouldn't work just fine on the XT network, but it would be nice to hear from someone that is using one on the XT network.

It looks like the 5800 will be my choice. I had a play with a N85 today the keyboard was quite OK but found the the other buttons a but fiddly. No doubt I would get mores used to them with time

I would really like to get an idea as to how good the touchscreen is on the 5800 as I have not been able to play with one. Do you mainly use the stylus or your fingers? I text quite a bit and really don't want to have to use the stylus for that.

I am used to using the touch screens on Palm devices, I have a TX. Do either of you have experience with the Palm touchscreens? How would it compare to those screens?

Have only once or twice used my wife's TX - only very briefly & that ~2yrs ago. Do not really remember what the touchscreen was like (& she is wise enough to have long ago hit the sack, so I am not about to check now - doubt it is comparable anyway. I do not recall any haptic feedback, but maybe there was?).

I find it easy to use the Numeric and full Qwerty keyboards on the 5800 with fingers & I am sure yours are more nimble than mine (as noted previously, I made very limited use of mobile phones in the past - only had basic phones & always found the key interfaces a pain). I typically use the numeric keypad in portrait mode & the full Qwerty keyboard in landscape mode.

There is also a mini Qwerty keyboard on the 5800 that I find more difficult (keys a bit too small for my thumbs). But no problem as the Numeric and full Qwerty keyboards cover all situations.

I do sometimes use the stylus, especially for some website buttons/links which can be quite small. Occasionally I carry on using the stylus on one of the keyboards, but only because I have it in my hand at the time.

If you live in the Wellington northern suburbs area you are welcome to come and try the keyboard (PM me if you want to). Alternatively, most Vodafone shops probably have a 5800 in stock you can try. I doubt you would find the keyboards an issue, but I guess only you can make that judgement.

There are a few UI features that I find not entirely convenient; eg to exit many apps, it is necessary to press "Options", then select "Exit" from the list & in almost all cases, it is necessary to scroll down 1 position to exposure the "Exit" option. That takes 3 "clicks", which can be a bit of a pain when you need reading glasses but do not have them with you! However, it is clearly deliberate & I can see the reasoning (to minimise the risk of accidentally closing an app). I would probably be more annoyed if the "Exit" option was exposed & I kept accidentally closing apps.

I use my phone regularly (some might say a little too regularly for a man of my age) and I find the 5800 touch screen to be good but not excellent.

As it's a resistive screen, a good amount of pressure is needed to make things happen at times, but this is comparable to a physical button so not a biggie for me. My problem is that I often compare the screen performance of my 5800 to my iPod Touch. Not a fair comparison as they are a different technology.

There IS haptic feedback on the 5800 - I have mine cranked up to level 3, which is the most "aggressive" feedback. It's adequate.

The "keys" are well spaced on the screen, the feedback is good, the stylus only really comes out when web browsing to capture small areas of text or to click on a particularly small section of the page.

All in all, I am satisfied with the 5800, but if the X6 with it's capacitive screen and virtually identical everything else were the same price as the 5800, that's what I'd buy.

As it stands, I believe the 5800 is the best value touchscreen handset on the market at present.

Thanks again for your detailed replies. I use fingers to input data on my Palm TX and it works well enough most of the time, though no haptic feedback so hard to tell if you have made an entry unless you are looking at the screen.

Agree on the X6, its a very very nice unit. Some one suggested that as an option earlier on. I like the capacitive screen and the inclusion of 2100 for the WCDMA frequencies. In that last day or so I have priced them out of the US and the price isn't too much more than the 5800 (about NZD$100 more). The risk though is that you might get sent the wrong model plus getting warranty if the need arises. I'm not sure the risks are worth the price saving. As for buying here in New Zealand, like you I don't think it's worth the extra money.

The inclusion of 2100? Are you suggesting that the 5800 doesn't have 2100? The Voda/2deg version sure does, as well as UMTS 900. Would be very surprised if the Telecom 5800 was not UMTS 850/2100.

Hi tenhno,

If you wish to have a similar phone to 5800, you can go for 5230 at parell imported, 1yr warranty.
n85 the slider, is quiet nice phone, not bad camera, no touchscreen, no issues with the battery, ONLY USB CHARGER PORT.

What are you looking for?
only XT NOKIA device?

Since I got some great help on here I thought I would let you know how things worked out with the new phone.

I thought seriously about an X6 but ended up buying a 5800 out of the US. I got it brand new at a good price, however with the small risk that I might have problems claiming on warranty.

It arrived the Wed before Easter. I charged the battery put in my sim card and it worked without any issues. I updated to the latest software (firmware) with out any problems, no need to change the product code. I installed the latest version of Nokia maps and then the Aus/NZ map database, who needs a Navman? It automatically set up the correct APN's etc for the XT network.

I have installed Skype, (yet to use in anger), Opera 10, not Opera Mini, Sports tracker, the level and the angle apps.

My thoughts so far.....

The screen isn't as quite as responsive as a capacitive screen BUT has the big advantage that it can be used with a stylus or finger nail to tick or choose small boxes on web pages that are too small to check with a finger like you have to do with a capacitive screen. For me the resistive screen wins out here.

The operating system works well and is easy to use, plus there is onboard help. I have found it to be quite intuitive and a pleasure to use. The navigation around the text screen is straight forward and the contacts are easy to search and choose. The calendar syncs nicely with my Palm desktop via Mobile Master.

The batterty life is as good as any other phone I have had. The Nokia Maps app works very well, either in offline or online modes. You can choose what voice, (male/female, UK/US etc) In the car it plays thru my bluetooth handsfree kit. I am very impressed with this app, as I said before who needs a Navman.

Opera is excellent, better than the original equip browser. The Sports tracker app is brilliant if you are into walking, running, cycling, or even just want to record a trip in your car.

The level app seems to work well but the angle meter is not accurate at all angles being about 4 degrees out at some points.

When you look at the 5800 there is nothing that can do what it does for the price. The iPhone is the smart phone that many aspire to own. The 5800 makes the iPhone look very expensive, in fact I think the only thing the iPhone has going for it is the good GUI that it has. It cannot run more than one app at once, it cannot be used as a mass storage device, you can only add apps from the Apple store, and it has the capacitive screen.

One big advantage the 5800 has over the iPhone is the Nokia maps app works in offline mode unlike the Google maps on the iPhone which require internet access to work. As was pointed out to me by an iPhone owner it's when you are in the back blocks and the maps are of most use to you and you are out of cellphone coverage that the iPhone maps don't work.

All in all I am very happy with the 5800, it should do me for quite a while.

Pretty much somes up my experience to date. Hard to argue about value for money. Seems to be as capable as the large majority of other smartphones for less than half the price of some.

Have stuck with the default browser so far though. Perhaps I should try Opera?

Agree totally re Maps & Sports Tracker - both excellent. Have Level & Angle meter loaded, but see them more as 'party tricks'. The level does seem to work surprising well though. Of course all these apps are available for other phones as well.

Another app I bought a few days ago (US$1) that is highly rated is Photo Translate, but I have not really tested it yet.

Also bought the QuickOffice & pdf viewer, but again have not used them yet.
