I tried in LA, no luck. The stupid woman didn't even know what a Simcard was, and tried to get me to buy a whole phone with prepaid already loaded for about 16usd. I'd read you can waltz into a walmart and grab a sim - this is not true, at least, I had no luck.
Your options are at&t and t-mobile.Probably, you need to drop into an actual store as resellers are rubbish.
Canada was easy to get a sim. Similar to NZ , but their data was prohibitively expensive.

Simple Mobile is a MVNO operating on T-Mobile's network. Their plans are all non contract. According to their FAQ. Does a customer have to sign a contract? We do not require a contract for our plan, however all customers must agree to our terms and conditions prior to activating the service.
The reason why they state $60/month is so after the first month you have to pay another $60 next month to retain the plans offering of unlimited calling/txt/data. I.e. your prepay balance must remain at $60 Read the general terms and conditions on the bottom of the Plans page.

I got a prepaid SIM off eBay, but it turned out that for whatever reason, it wouldn't activate properly.
So in the end I went in the the AT&T store and got set up. They were very helpful and it wasn't any drama. I swear I was the only person in the store that didn't have Spanish as my first language!!
I found it annoying that you had to pay for incoming txt and calls!!
One thing to note is if you go in to Canada with at least an AT&T SIM, it won't automatically roam. I had to put my NZ SIM back in again and roam with Rogers.
3G coverage was variable depending on where you were.? The good thing is that if there was no 3G, it would roll back to EDGE, which was still pretty fast.

I found the guys at Radio Shack to be quite helpful, they just didn't have what I needed. AT&T stores were definitely helpful.

Great that its not on contract, but then again - Can we get these sim cards here in NZ (online like ebay) so that we are all setup before we land there?or if its not avilable online can it easily brought in stores. - [ reason I ask is, something parallel to this is black n white / digital island - you cant easily buy them thru stores ]
And more so, any reviews on the company - ? like if it is reliable??
cause as someone pointed out if one is travelling from one state to another will the rates be constant. or if you leave a particular state's region (from were u brought the sim), and if u go anywere outside u r charged all toll calls..... ??
I would like to get a simple mobile sim before I leave NZ .. . . ... whats the best way to get a sim ?? I saw some on ebay but a majority of them did not ship outside US. any idea?
