johnr: Bigfella you are incorrect its not 128k its 64k

When HSDPA is launched it should be 384k uplink

Grab your VMC and give it a go - the 3G upload rate was upgraded to 128Kb a couple of weeks ago.

HSDPA uplink is running @ 384Kb very nicely - downlink is even nicer :)

Oh and this was tested using my Nokia 6680 as the data modem and only use to get 60k uplink

At what stage does the likes of skype and yahoo instant messaging become feasible on the vodafone mobile scheme?...

Voice and in particular video require bidrectional support... so need both a high upload speed as well as a high downlod speed.
HSPDA is coming.... end 2006... HSUPA? High speed upload packet access? is when 2007?

Is the 128 kps offered by 3G umts sufficent to run these? Will it be ok when HSPDA arrives? Or do I wait for Wimax... I know more is better... they work fine on my telstra clear coonection... 4 mpbs?

To use IM like yahoo you need next to no speed but using skype is breaching the T&C's of both carriers.

I have used Skype across current 3G WCDMA and it worked alright and that was when it was 64k uplink not 128k

I don't trust that 'Trusted Review' There aint no way in hell you would ever get 1.8Mbps out of the lab. Also Voda UK say to expect a max of 1.4Mbps.

What a shonky 'Trusted Review'.

Try this one instead:

Again more funky stuff from Voda with the Dashbaord reporting that it is connected at 1.8Mbps whilst on GPRS.

It was interesting to read the article in the Dom Post yesterday http://stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3762986a28,00.html where Vodafone were keen on taking up a speed challenge comparing HSDPA & EVDO using with independant tests.

Since both johnr and jama are coming to Geekzone 2006 and HSDPA is (apparently) live already on Wgtn CBD sites then maybe they could both bring along their device of choice and show us their stuff!

Who's up for it? Jama obviously would be! :-)

Having been there before I sure am up for it. But if you are going to compare networks it should be a comparison of shiny new against shiny new i.e. HSDPA vs RevA. Although I would be up for a wee blow out of HSDPA against Rev0. I don't expect Rev0 to win but it would be interesting.

It's a shame, but johnr is no longer coming to Geekzone 2006, and his seat is now taken by another attendee. In no way I think his presence is being withdrawn because of this challenge.

What's really interesting is that this time we won't have any Vodafone person on the audience. Not for lack of invitation.

using a harrier on Telecom and a hua wei datacard on vodfone, I have got good results from both, currently Telecom has the upper hand in speed terms i often get 800k, vodafone reliably pull about 300k. and push is always 64k coverage when stationary on vodafone is fault free, it seems to be sensitive to hands near the antenna. Telecom has a greater foot print though.

Vodafone have one huge advantage, simcards and a huge variety of devices in which to use them, also WAP usage is fully included asides chat so you can drop your data sim in a decent phone the get email and even surf the net.

I use telecom evdo daily on a harrier. I use a vmc card to test aa lot as my flatmates never comes cloose to his 1GB plan.
