semigeek: Just out of interest, what was your first mobile phone?  Mine was the Motorola Profile 300. But awhile ago was given one of the first Motorola's that you had to carry in a bag over your shoulder.

From those days, "025" was Telecom NZs flavor of the month which meant TDMA.

I think it was a 5120, then a 6210i (SMS send and receive... ohh err..amazing.. back then LBS was 2 years away. 11 years later...)

well i had the user friendly "brick phone" you could use it as a hammer or weapon or phone.
it was good, you could never miss place it!

oh the pockets that it ripped to bits :)

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.

First was a Nokia 5110 back in 99 or 00. 2000 I think. Followed not long after by a Bosch (509 I think). Was very trendy back in the day. Built like a real tool. Bashed, mashed, and smashed that phone and it took it all in its stride.

I only got my first phone last year (XT launch day) and have had three Telecom R6's since then, one lasted a solid year before being bricked in a software upgrade..... I borrowed and then bought the second off a friend who had upgraded to an android phone, while the third is a warranty replacement for the first thanks to @NealR. Saving that for when the second dies.....

They are such PoS!!! I are needs money....

Let's see, first mobile was the AudioVox brick in 1996 i think.. on Telecom, then the Motorola Startac 130 also on Telecom and then briefly flirted with Vodafone in 1999 - 2000 with the Motorola CD920 which had excellent call quality. Gutted when I couldnt source a new battery so back it was to Telecom from 2000 onwards.

Can't quite remember my first company mobile but the first phone I owned was a Nokia 5120 which I thought was pretty cool at the time, played a good Snake game. I still have it - I'm saving it for Antiques Roadshow 2050. Gonna be rich.

fab: I was working for a private telecoms outfit up north just after deregulation (88?), and we started selling cellphones as soon as they came out.

I remember us getting one of the first Motorola (?) ones which was a handset...that was attached to this huge breifcase. Monstrous thing it was! Heavy as too, but when you have nothing like it, it seemed just amazing. You literally had to lug it around.

Yep that's what I have sitting in a cupboard still

Whilst I can't say I personally had it, my mother worked for NZ post / telecom and she had one of the first 20 phones ever issued, problem was it was the size of a toolbox and from memory the initial number range was 025 926xxx

Mine was a Nokia *insert forgotten model number here* purchased from Ben Rumble Communications in Riccarton Mall (CHCH) on September 23rd(?) 1999 for the massive sum of $100 with $50 talk time included. It was one of those 'will make phone calls and nothing else' models running on Telecom's network. Great phone! Considering I wasn't even in High School at the time it did make me feel mighty important! I think I only ever made two calls on it and received 3 before I lost interest.

Motorola d560. Absolutely dreadful phone!

I eventually got sick of the dropped calls and crappy user interface and replaced it with an Alcatel One Touch View.

richms: Motorola 5200 - piece of junk and they put the letters on the wrong keys - not that it mattered since it was in the days before you could send a text.

What do you mean the wrong keys??  If you mean QZ were in digit 1 then that's how they were  prior to about 1992 in NZ..

allstarnz: An Alcatel One Touch DB, circa 2001

That was my first. Dad had a Motorola Micro TAC, and Mum had an Ericsson of some sort.
