jjnz1: Is that the experience of all 3G network users?, (Telecom included).

I would hope not considering Telecom XT is a 100% 3G WCDMA network!

I haven't noticed this at all, call quality is good for me on XT. No idea about 2D, or even if they enforce a 3G to 2G handover during a call like VF?

A friend of my wifes who thru her toys out of the cot when Telecom wouldn't fix her old CDMA fone (don't ask. If you new here you would understand) ported the number to Vodafone and bought a cheap Nokia slide. She has come to stay with us at Tauranga and went to use here fone but no GSM coverage. She's basically screwed until she goes into town and hopefully she can get a signal. Before at work we were given new Galaxy 3 fones and we had old GSM fones I always have to call FWD my work fone to my Telecom mobile so that I could receive calls where our TG house in Pyes Pa. Now with the Galaxy 3 there is no need to as I get 4 bars of 3G.

If Telecom can sell 3G fones for $199 surely Voda and 2D can..

Vodafone offer the 845 for $168 through Dick Smiths and others. It's a full blown smartphone and does GSM and 3G.

Telecom's phones look expensive by comarison......feature for feature.

Baird also announced that Vodafone will push out the life of its aging GSM network until at least 2020. If there are problems on the 3G network customers default to the 2G network - ensuring, in most cases, that there is no total loss ofservice.

He said that customers value the GSM network as a "fall back position".

"They like the redundancy it offers, so we've made the call to keep the GSM network operational for at least another decade."

It also works the other way if GSM is lost then customers with 3G devices carry on and they know no difference

Agreed, that article in the Herald was a quote from Tony Baird recently appointed general manager of networks at VfoneNZ.

I know a fair amount of people with 2G phones.

Some are in the 20s, one of them have a Nokia 1100; some are older and just want a older phone that is easier to hold with a larger screen. In fact I have been asked to keep a lookout on Trademe for them but Nokia 6210 and 6310i's are going for up to $250 if see them....

Some work colleagues (professionals) used Nokia 3210s or 3310 wasn't it ... B/w displays. Many of them just do their email, surf the news and banking in the office and then at home .... They don't need 3G Modem ... They are not the round the world (RTW) traveller like some of the younger guys .... having a mortgage to deal and such ........
