nofam:
My brother-in-law has an iPhone 4 with a screenguard but no case, and he thrashes the hell out of it. It looks like dog-tucker on all sides, and is starting to have call-quality issues.
My wife keeps her iPhone 4 in her handbag, and its holding out well. Granted, it has a screen protector and silicone case.
And yes, pictures of the iPhone and Galaxy S screens really don't do them justice; and you can't really make a call on the OS until you've seen how customizable Android is, and how convoluted iOS is!! :-P
Oh, I know Android is customizable. Thats one of the things that both attracts and scares me about the platform :-)
By "scares me", I mean that I want a device that is pretty capable without customization, not one that requires customization to reach that state. I'm sure thats possible. I just need to choose wisely.
Also, I'm not sure I'd call iOS convoluted. In terms of functionality, I find it pretty good to use... with the exception of SMS messages always being alerted by a modal dialog, and that it currently requires jailbreaking to provide Wifi hotspot support (although that may change with 4.3).
