This video appears to show that the N900 has an IR port, I can't remember that being mentioned anywhere?

Thanks for the price heads up, I'd be stoked if it were that price, but surprised if it worked out that cheap at first release...

interestingly. nokia.co.nz isn't listing the N900 as an upcoming device while the N97 mini is - both have the same release date. Neither the x6 or x3 are listed either.

The IR port has not been mentioned by Nokia or anywhere in specs...but if you read Micky's recent blog on Nokiausers, he pointed out he too noticed this IR port (if that is indeed what it is) although has no official word to confirm either way.

As for the price...while I too would be surprised and stoked if the N900 retailed for less than the N97 on release...its actually not so far fetched...

The N97 when first released by Nokia retailed for $700 US
The N900, according to Nokiausa.com, will retail on release for $650 US

So to suggest one could get it for $50 US cheaper than that currently advertised, when doing a bulk purchase, would appear achiveable

I think your really missing the point regarding a devices optimum operating conditions...

Yes the iPhone can operate on both XT and Vodafone...but not at its designed optimum...this is the point I was trying to make you with the N97 and N900...

The iPhone includes 850/2100MHz WCDMA, bands that are both used hence most suitable for XT.
When the band 850MHz is used, we call it the NAM variant, meaning its used by North America, as thats the frequency band some of their neworks use.

Vodafone's network, as I have stated before, operates on the 900/2100MHz freqeuncies, meaning while the iPhone will work, it will only work on the 2100MHz frequency...so areas where Vodafone do not have 2100GHz and are covered instead by the 900MHz freqency, the iPhone will not recieve 3G speed.

Bear in mind, I speak only of 3G, not 2G which is GSM and when the iPhone falls out of range of Vodafones 2100MHz WCDMA, it will fall back to 2G GSM...so while the iPhone will always work on Vodafone, i will not always work at 3G speeds, as it cannot utilize both its included 3G freqeuncy bands.

Telecom's' XT nework, on the other hand, can utilize both the iPhones 3G freqeuncy bands 850 and 2100MHz WCDMA, hence it will operate at the devices designed optimum speeds. Telecom's XT network does not require 2G GSM to fallback too as the whole XT network is 3G, meaning it is optimised for the fastest speeds.

It's actually quite amusing as currently only Vodafone retail the iPhone, yet they do not have a network optimised for this device and since XT launched they have been struggling to keep all their iPhone customers from jumping to XT.

Having said all that (phew!), there is no perfect 3G capable device that will operate at its optimum on both Vodafone and Telecom XT, at least not yet...that would require 850/900/2100 WCDMA.

The current choices are to either go for a device that's optimised for 1 network only, or get a device that is optimised for 1 and does a decent job at the other...

So the best choices for the different networks:
1) Telecom XT = 850/2100MHz WCDMA (NAM variant)
2) Vodafone = 900/2100MHz
3) Both = 850/2100MHz WCDMA + Quadband GSM
The latter would allow optimum 3G speeds on XT, and some optimum 3G speeds on Vodafone with a fallback to slower 2G speeds when out of range.

The iPhone does 1 & 3...it cannot do 2, its not optimised for Vodafone.

Do you guys know what kinds of app will the n900 have? Roberth (at nokiausers.net) still hasnt posted any details about price. Do you guys know anyone that can get it at wholesale in nz so we can do this whole thing locally?

There are Nokia Tablets already in the market so just look for the applications for Maemo already out there...

No, not necessarily. But I'd say it's a good indication of what applications you could expect. I wouldn't be surprised it they actually were compatible anyway.

That will be sweet. I saw somewhere that you can use a bluetooth keyboard with it and there is a way to use mouse with it aswell. If so then this would be a gd portable computer i suppose.

its a 3.5inch screen - can't quite see the point of a mouse when you have touch screen and stylis as well.
Keyboard definitely.
