I've been trying to convince my parents for a while that a Tivo would really suit them. They don't have (or want) Sky, and the Tivo seems like a device that would be nice and easy for them to use, and having support from Telecom would be useful too.

I went today to look online and try and price one up, only to find that the retailers who stocked them (Noel Leeming, Bond and Bond) no longer had them on their website, and no mention of them on the Telecom website any more either.

I asked Telecom on Twitter about it and they confirmed that as of July, they have pulled the product and that once stock is gone (which it now seems to be), that's it.

They have confirmed they will continue to support Tivo for current users however.

But it seems like the Tivo market in NZ is now dead.

There's still a few left at some Bond & Bonds, but you need to phone a store & get them to check their system to see which store has one.
Hopefully the TiVo folks will regroup, get their act together and release an updated model soon. Maybe. Perhaps.
Dan? Any hints?

So if they have decided to give up on the product, it might be hard to get them back into it, even if there is a new model.

It's a shame, I think the product had a huge potential here for the non-Sky market - but the execution just wasn't there.

The great thing about MySky was how easy it was to use - and I understand that the Tivo was similar (and better in some regards). Sadly I can't say the same about some of the other Freeview recorders I have seen.

No. Hybrid TV (Australia) has it. Telecom and TVNZ were early on with them, but things might have changed since. There were rumours they even had a new model coming out sometime.

Tivo stocks have been selling out everywhere over the last few months, and the last I heard (probably mid June) the 1TB model was being launched soon to replace it. It's sad to see this clearly isn't the case.

The tivo website says the following

To purchase TiVo media devices and wireless adapters, call Telecom NZ on 0800 MYTIVO or visit your nearest Telecom, Noel Leeming or Bond and Bond store.

So if they are not for sale at the moment, they probably need to update their website.

If buying off trademe, make sure you get the original receipt, in case it is DOA and you need it replacing.

I'm uneasy about buying (Or telling someone to buy) a product which is essentially EOL.

Telecom may support it now, but they could pull support for it at any time. Ongoing EPG support for example could essentially cripple the device if they decide not to maintain it.

I believe Hybrid TV will continue to support the device and not Telecom.

I suspect they would have to issue a lot of refunds if that happened, because that would essentially make it not fit for purpose.

TIVO has been this essentially here in NZ almost since it came out. The model currently being offered was manufactured in 2009 or something like that. The appeal, especially recently, has been the low cost of the unit and it's still worth pursuing one if you can track one down. Yes it's end of line, but it's great value for the money.
