I have used the Tivo for a while now while I was with Telecom. Sadly after the quake I had to move and the area I have built in does not have Telecom..bummer...However I had to go with Telstra.

They told me Tivo will not work with their cable and therefore had to use freeview with the T box. I am not really enjoying it. So I wonder are they correct in that Tivo will not work with them?

This is misleading and probably someone after a commission. TiVo will work just fine with any ISP in New Zealand. Just plug to your network and enjoy.

Assuming that your T-Box is using the one existing ethernet port on the cable modem, you will need to connect some kind of router to your Telstra cable modem. Or if you have two modems and aren't using the port on the second one you can use that but that might not be placed handy to your AV set up.

TiVo is fine on any provider as Mauricio says, just not unmetered CASPA. Assuming Telecom are still doing that.

Oh this is interesting. Even the technician who installed said tivo would not work. Seems I have a battle on my hands as they signed me up on a 2 yr contract.....or they would not install it. Buggers

You can use any ISP with Tivo, but after rereading your comment I'm assuming you're asking whether you can plug the Tivo into the cable to tune the channels - the answer is no. You just use a regular UHF TV aerial like you had previously.

Hi,

Just to check - are you talking about using the internet features of the Tivo ( if so then see the above post) or the recording/TV features of the tivo.

If the recording/TV features, then you will not be able to plug the TelstraClear cable directly into the Tivo, you will need to have the T-Box decoder

Oh I never picked up on that, I assumed the OP meant EPG and CASPA.

To clarify my post for the OP. You cannot receive Tivo TV channels through cable or internet. Only update the EPG and download on demand content.

If they got the OP to sign up to T-Box for 2 years on the basis that they won't be able to use the Tivo at all with Telstra, then they could probably make a case for misleading sales practice and get out of the T-box.

The OP has a TiVo, so obviously she knows she needs an aerial for the TV reception. The ISP connection is needed only for EPG and for CASPA downloads.

TiVo will work with ANY ISP. Just plug it to the network (router or switches) and be happy.

If you signed the contract under the information that TiVo would not work then you were mislead and you should be able to get out of the contract. Commerce Commission is your friend.

Proving they said that tivo wouldn't work though is easier said than done. If they said it over the phone, then they should have call recordings. If they were sold it by a door knocker, then it may be impossible.

Very odd advice, tivo only needs the internet to get your EPG(ELECTRONIC PROGRAM GUIDE), and tivo can be used with any ISP in New Zealand.....

To get tv signal, tivo uses a standard UHF aerial, and does not need an internet connection for this to work.

It was probably a case of someone not knowing what they were talking about. I know of people who thought that tivo would only work with telecom, and when I told them it worked with any isp they were surprised. I think it was due to teh way it was originally marketed, with telecom being the only initial seller of it.

I never did use Tivo for Caspa. My only use is to record and have access to the channels.

Just to let you know it has all been resolved.

Telstra has been wonderful about this and although I will keep my phone and broadband, they are taking back the freeview and taking me off the contract. They will also put the TV arial back to how it was.
