I keep hearing that TiVo is a great deal at $199. I am considering getting one to replace my old HDD recorder, but have a couple of questions first...

1. Does the TiVo have an external input (Component or Composite)? I would be wanting to feed my old model SKY decoder into the TiVo and record SKY programmes. If it does, then can I set the TiVo to record from the external input at scheduled times. (Basically, can I book a SKY programme for say 8PM tomorrow, and have my TiVo record it automatically using the external input?)

2. It it essential to have an internet connection to the TiVo? I read somewhere that the TiVo needs to talk to the internet from time to time or it will stop all together. If it does need internet, does it come with wireless, or do I have to cable it in?

Question number 2: I believe it comes with a wireless adapter.

No external inputs except for RF, network connection is required as the tivo everyday download updated EPG info, after a certain number of days without a successful connection it will loose the ability to record as it will not have any EPG info.

Yes they are provided with a Wifi adaptor

1) Tivo is limited to freeview. Only input is the UHF antenna.

2) You need the Internet connection to receive the EPG. Without it the Tivo will not receive any EPG as it does not work over the air like other freeview PVR's. Tivo comes with a wireless USB adaptor, it also has an ethernet connection at the back.

Thanks for the quick replies. It seems that I can't use a TiVo to record from my sky decoder.

Just a thought... If I hooked up the SKY decoder using the RF out connected to the RF in of the TiVo, I am guessing that the TiVo probably doesn't have an analogue tuner, so wouldn't display anything. Can anyone confirm that the TiVo has digital tuners only?

If it does have an analogue tuner built in, can you schedule recording from the analogue tuner?

It's starting to look like I will have to consider getting MYSKY then :(

When I got mine the wireless adapter was an optional extra.

As said above, Internet connection required for the EPG and software updates.

Nope, that's where the store stings you. Haha. But if you shop around you can get them online as cheap as $5 I read somewhere on here.

I paid $10 for a 2M HDMI cable from PBTech.

Thanks for that, so if I get a TiVo I will have to get a cable, I have run out anyway and only have the front HDMI socket on my receiver left. Still deciding if TiVo is worth it for me

I bought a HDMI switch - it automatically switches between two HDMI sources - if one source is turned off, it goes back to the previous one. Perfect for my HTPC + TiVo setup. Turn on HTPC Media Centre shows up, turn off HTPC, back to TiVo - with no fuss.
