Standby doesn't do anything other than turn off audio and video outputs, everything else keeps going as normal. Waste of time and defies the purpose of a PVR.

Debateable. As far as I am concerned I just want a PVR that records what I tell it to record, period.
Selecting the shows I want, either individually or series linked, and having those recorded is what I regard as the purpose of a PVR.
I don't regard the constant 24/7 recording of two random channels (ie whatever I was watching last) as either terribly useful or at all desirable. It just burns power and flogs the hard drive for no useful purpose, and it I could turn it off I would. In fact, it's one of the reasons the Tivo has been powered off at the wall for the last 3-4 weeks - the other being the dearth of actual interesting content on Freeview.
Given that some like this "feature" and others don't, the logical solution is for Tivo to provide an option to enable or disable it in the settings screen.
I don't care for the constant buffering as I don't watch live TV. I've turned off the suggestions features as I'm not that interested in it. Some may say that's the core of Tivo which is fine, I just don't bother with it. I can't see why a PVR can't go into standby, with the internal clock waking the unit and alerting it to something scheduled to be recorded. There is no need for it to be going constantly 24/7. It's not 'green' and it's not in the best interests of the hardware.
I'd expect an option to operate either way but I doubt any development will be happening on this old hardware, so we've got what we've got.

Also turns off the cryptic LEDs on the front. Anyway standby should turn of the display/audio and powers down the HDD etc.
Only time it should wake up again is when a scheduled recording is coming up.
I dislike suggested recordings as most of the stuff it was recording we would never watch, pushing the thumbs up/down thing is not my cup of tea.
Anyway turned suggested recordings off. :-)
Anyway happy with it because of the price we paid and looking at replacing our existing/previous PVR like for like would have been too expensive.
Best thing that happened for me with the TiVo was it got the GSOD and I then got a dishtv T-1050. Love it. Got it from the dishtv web sight as a refurbished unit. $270.00 with full new warranty. I see they still have refurbished one's listed. Edit, no longer listing refurbished one's, but they do turn up now and then

Yes once you've used the Tivo for awhile you sorta work out what each led is for. But coming from an informative LCD screen with words and then stepping back in time to a single led...
When you first power up the Tivo most of the front options are disabled too.
