GeoffisPure: Though the TiVo is a great device when working (especially while networked), let's not forget the fact that a significant number arrived dead on arrival in recent times. Maybe they sold them all quickly as the old stock was starting to break down in storage.

From what I can gather, the main thing that fails is HDD. When you think its reading/writing 24/7 plus seeking when your watching something... back and forth... etc etc skipping adverts - that is really a big workout for the HDD.

I plan to make a ghost copy of the drive one day so 'when' the HDD does eventually fail I can get it going again with a new HDD.

I did briefly see a 1tb TiVo model on the Noel Leeming website but was there one day and gone the next.

Both my neigbours, my brother and even my landlord have all got TiVo now. I know a few other people who want to buy TiVo but cant... TiVo if your watching, ditch telecom and get promoting!

Telecom weren't outrageously greedy - they were incompetent.

The box price was high but not extortionate for what it was and where other units were priced at the time (although charging an extra $100+ to be able to connect to the box over a network was a complete rip off).

They needed to get them into mainstream media/retail channels, such as the shops where people normally go to buy TVs etc, and didn't. They needed to market them, and didn't. They needed qualified staff in the shops able to explain and promote the units, and didn't.

When I went into a Telecom shop and asked a few questions just after launch the staff were completely clueless, couldn't explain or tell me anything, and had no interest in promoting the product.

High price + poor retail presence + awful marketing + incompetent retail staff = epic fail.

If they had priced a bit lower, got into bed with the major retail chains, and promoted it properly they could have had a huge success. There wasn't much else on the market quality wise for a good Freeview PVR when they launched. They *ought* to have been able to market it decently esp with the full muscle of TVNZ behind Hybrid, but didn't.

The mistake was hitching their wagon to Telecom and having no good marketing strategy, compounded by letting Telecom do such an awful job.

Bingo.

There's no way to turn this off either, just like you can't really put the unit into standby either.

Given 95% of what I watch is pre recorded, I have no need for constant live buffering of 2 channels. And when I turn it off, I'm quite happy for the HDD to stop and only start again when needed to record a previously scheduled program.

Anyone know where you can buy a TIVO remote control, my wee boy dumped ours in a glass of water the other day and it stopped working. Luckily once all dried out it worked again, but it got me thinking, the box is totally useless without the remote, and it might pay to get a backup one now while they may still be obtainable.

Sky is too expensive for what you get.

The MyTivo website has them from memory. I think the price was quite reasonable too.
On some other thread somone mentioned snazzy upgrade versions you can order in from overseas - glow in the dark & such. I think some learning remotes will do the trick too.

There's always Logitech harmony remotes that works well with Tivo.
In fact, I haven't used my original Tivo remote at all. Used logitech harmony since day 1.

It cost $ 27.23 Aussie dollars and I am pretty sure it was free delivery as no charge came up for delivery on their invoice when I put the Credit Card details online thru. I can't check the credit card statement at the moment as I used my partners card and she aint here at the moment. Though I am pretty sure there was no shipping charge. I will findout for sure and let you know when she gets home.

Good one. Just checked the site and it's a shame they don't seem to offer the more expensive backlit remote that they used to sell. That looked pretty cool.
