If you're sure it wasn't the fan at the back, then it could be the drive on it's way out. Probably is worth thinking of replacing it if you can.

240GB is a bit on the small side, don't you think? I'd be going larger, not smaller. I'd get a WD Red or Purple drive.

Might be indication that problems are developing, probably good time to ensure you have a backup image though.

I don't worry about what's on the drive. it only records news etc ...

1) can I replace the drive without the current one (eg if it fries itself)

2) I am guessing it needs a 3.5" drive? will it connect to a 2.5" one?

If it's only for news, then sure I guess the smaller drive should be fine. Give it a go. 

You need the image of at least the system part of the drive. Keep a copy of the image just in case the SSD fails at some point,

Just use a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter to bolt the drive in and you're away.
