Ugh, I'd heard that it used to be bad but was improved with updates, but this doesn't sound good! Although hopefully you don't have to go into "Now Playing" to find your recordings (it took ages for my parents to get used to that when they got their Tivo).

The T-Box UI since VF purchased it is a lot better, at least it is sent out in a far better resolution compared to Sky"s pixelated UI. It is now very quick with no real lag. The only issue I get is the occasional sound stutter on channel transfer for a few seconds.

scuwp: I think recording broadcast TV is on it's way out anyway. On-demand & streaming will replace all broadcast TV in time, and all the TiVo's & Freeview boxes etc will be obsolete.

My bet on TiVo is that they will keep it alive just long enough to avoid any claims under the CGA (5 years a reasonable expectation for a recording device going 24/7?) and then stop any support including EPG, which will render it useless.

Well not really useless. Will have the same functionality of the old VCRs. In fact Choice and Prime repeats are no longer flagged as such and multiple copies get recorded so i have to resort to manual recording especially on Choice. The Simpsons on TV3 seems to suffer the same problems..

It's a damn shame, TiVo is a classic example of very poor implementation wrecking a very good product.

My issue with their launch here was trying to tie it into Telecom offerings and the insane $800 price(vs $550 DVR's that were better).

I briefly saw Tivo in action for the first time recently and it was a very nice and easy GUI. Probably better than mysky.

What tivo-like freeview product can you buy off the shelf that is better than Tivo?

I remain a rabid fan of our two TiVo units. Excellent WAF despite her initial reluctance. The second one initially was a spare but it is now set to record all the impoortant series and the 'main' unit records the ad-hoc stuff and any movies I preselect when checking each weekend.

Only in the last year have I got a little media server going that downloads and converts the TiVo recordings for long term storage on a NAS, replayed with XBMC.

The big problem with NZ free on demand services, is that the quality of the picture isn't great, and in the near future they will begin charging for some or all content. There are also ads, which with a tivo you can skip.The big benefit of a tivo, is you could download the program to your PC, to them watch on an ipad.

I don't think there are any, that is the problem. Some of these cheap PVRs are rubbish. People who own tivos tend to either really like them, or hate them.

The only reason I put our TiVo away was the woeful state Freeview has become. The device is still the best of it's kind IMHO

I would keep it powered, as they don't seem to like being unpowered for a long period of time.

It certainly does, but there is a big price difference, especially if you got one for $200 or included as part of your telecom contract at the time.

Actually launch price was $925, from memory, and you could pay it off interest free on your Telecom account.

We have three units, the first of which was picked up at launch and now has a 1TB drive.

Will have to wait and see what happens. Obviously won't be happy to see it all come to an end.

I think the original $925 included the home networking package, so if you deduct that from the price, it would be around $800.
It was also the addons that cost. Such as the expansion drive, and the home networking package. So a lot of people have quite a bit of cash invested. Will see what happens, but I think the smart move would be for Spark (was telecom then) to manage the EPG with TVNZ who were in it with them. Otherwise they are going to possibly have to do quite a few refunds for people under the CGA, as it will be almost unfot for purpose if it didn't include the EPG. Interesting that in some countries they charge a subscription for the EPG for tivo, but in NZ that was included as part of the initial purchase price.
