Hi Spong:  oh my goodness I an flabbergasted at what I have read about all the work the 'community' group of volunteers have been doing for many years now.  I am so grateful to you all, thank you.....

I have a clearer understanding of the history and the process of what is happening around our Tivos and the difference between motherships.  Thank you for that Spong.

I have also just read the TiVo repairs in Australia link you supplied - wow.

May I ask you Spong - if you hear of any technician people closer to my home in Hastings I would be really thankful to hear.  Because I am not able to do the soldering etc and reading about how the update needs SATA cables and that you have to open the Tivo - I would prefer if someone else does that.

I am content to wait until all is finalized from the Oz/Tivo mothership and then have someone reconfigure my TIVO.

If I cannot find anyone near me would you be willing to do it for me Spong - I read you a willing to do a few yourself.  I would be more than happy to reimburse you for parts and labour/time and of course shipping.

Let me know if this is a possibility please, and I wish there was someway to thank all the others involved - perhaps you can convey this for me.

That's a negative. I've unplugged it and will probably leave it until the PROM has been replaced and software mod done.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

My Tivo won't fire up either. I have a Green flashing light on the far left of the LCD panel. No matter what I try, it won't power up. Any ideas anybody?

This generally suggests a general motherboard fault. Often it's one of the RAM chips that's failed, and heat can temporarily bring it back to life, but replacing one or more of the RAM chips requires specialist desoldering gear and skills. It's probably not worth it.

One of ours does this.

I use a hairdryer to heat one of the RAM chips every time I want to plug it into power again.

I have just got some replacement RAM from Element14, so once I've got through this deluge of PROM chip replacements I'll replace it.

I repaired our one that had the flashing green LED problem.

First use hairdryer and corrugated cardboard shroud/shield to determine which RAM chip needs the heat for the TiVo to power on normally:

Then remove the faulty RAM chip with ChipQuik (and a soldering iron!)

And here is the finished result (the other side isn't lined up perfectly which made the job a little more difficult):

It works!! no more hair dryer!

I was just wondering what would happen now if my tivo was accidently turned off now. If I turned it back on would I still be able to watch tv on it?

I'm not so concerned about access to an EPG

You should be just fine. Just don't do a full clear and delete as the official Tivo mothership needs to be there for the guided setup, unless you've had it PROM modded and the new community software installed.
