Re the remote

One of the coolest functions is simply the learning capability i.e. use the TiVo remote to turn on/off your TV

My TiVo is likely to only connect via WiFi, so transferring huge amounts of data will be v slow, and regardless I only have a laptop (macbook) at home, no large drives to store programs on.

It must have an ethernet port too - if it didn't they wouldn't be selling the wifi adapters seperately.  (they are only included for free during the initial promotion ismy understanding)

Ahh, a misunderstanding. The TiVo indeed does have ethernet, but I do not have a wired network in my home.

@hebegb

The TiVo remote that comes with the box in NZ can be programmed to turn your TV off, change volume, and switch source. You can also set it up to change volume on an amp instead.

the free wifi adapter is a good deal (although useless to me since I have ethernet port by my TV anyway) but the free home networking package sounds sweet IIRc it costs $200 in Oz (or maybe $100?)

is the home networking package included in the $920 package? i though it was the tivo box and wireless adaptor only

Someone above suggested that Aus TiVo purchasers have a choice over hard drive capacity - actually, it only comes with a 160GB drive, but also has the optional 1TB external drive ($300 AUS for a "special" WD-orginated drive). While the same external drive will be available here, at least the 320GB internal drive in the NZ version will provide a useful amount of space. Personally, I wouldn't have even contemplating buying one with a 160GB drive.

I think the launch price is pretty reasonable, compared to other offerings and what one pays for TiVo in Aus: $1082NZ for the TiVo with wifi adapter and network kit (well, from the TiVo website). Even though I doubt I'd move to Telecom for the downloading aspect of the NZ TiVo (as that aspect doesn't really interest me), the advantage provided by the networking kit is worth a premium over the "My FreeviewHD" recorders (which will never get this feature, by nature of the format's specs).

Does anyone know whether the option to pay off the TiVo over 36 months is limited to those who have their broadband with Telecom, or can one still access this deal if one has only say a telephone line with them? I'm assuming the deal won't be available if you don't have at least some monthly business with them - however, for those of us in that situation surely we'd be able to just buy it with one lumpsum payment?

Will only Telecom stock the units, or will other places like DSE be able to sell them?

Is the networking kit/wireless adaptor included in both the $200 + 24mth @ $30 and $920 upfront launch bundle?

We'll probably get it. I was going to do - media centre PC to Xbox360 for my HDD recorded TV. This seams less headache tho.
I was also waiting on a Panasonic PVR (for the VEIRA Link with our Panasonic TV / Receiver) to drop in price and get network access, but this is here now -almost!
The wife wants Freeview. I want HD. The iphone new glow is wearing off. I want a new shiny thing .
$200 + 24mth @ $30 = $920 after 2 years is good for me.
And with the apparent easy use, it will likely have a good WAF too!

320G harddrive is much better than the 160G initially advertised. I'm sold now.

"Please help us get this EPG - contact Maori TV/Prime" - That's great.

Why on earth would Maori TV not agree to their PG being presented by TiVo?

Sky agreed to Prime being available on Freeview, why not allow the PG to be there?

Technically I think TiVo can just grab it, however it sounds like they want to it to be agreed upon for both Prime and Maori TV.

Technically they cannot grab it, as they are a commercial service and the copyright lawyers would love to test this case.

SKy/Prime and MTS will have an agreement with Freeview for the EPG to be sent out as EIT and MHEG data, nothing more, now given TIVO doesn't use EIT or MHEG for its data, their legal paople will say unless you have an agreement don't use the data.

*Technically* the TIVO software could easily be updated to utilise the MHEG data, and just grab the Prime and Maori TV EPG.  Of course, in practice it is unlikely to happen!
