Two pitfalls of the Tivo for me - 1) I am not with Telecom & 2) We can't get Freeview|HD in Northland!

I have a Tivo now, got one from telecom today on the $200 down, $30 a month plan.
I picked it up from a telecom store. They got 5 this morning and I got one of them.
It was easy to setup and is just as clear as mysky hdi.
ByeBye MySky now.. giving them one months notice tonight..

Well... I'm on the internet now because guess who's watching bloody 'Australian Masterchef' on MY tivo. B**ch. Just kidding. I love her heaps.

Isn't it cool? I've just finished setting up the home networking software - submitted my 'key' at 5pm but it hasn't been activated yet so can't setup my shares and test streaming - you got that far yet?

I wonder if TiVo movies will be just as clear as SKY movies? Apparently SKY HD movies are broadcast at 1080i, but I am not sure what the maximum quality for TiVo is, perhaps 720p, can anyone confirm this please? It has been reported on this forum that TiVo movies are in SD, which I think means only 480p or 576p? In any event, if you want the very best quality viewing for movies, you really need to watch blu-ray DVDs which can give you the full HD 1080p, provided that your TV is also 1080p.

Also, I think MySky HD movies can stay on your hard drive as long as you like, but the TiVo movies have to be watched within a few days, after which they are automatically erased. And each TiVo recent release movie costs nearly $7 to download, but with the SKY movie channels (20 and 22) it costs less than $20 per month (not including the $10 per month for the HD "ticket") to watch as many HD movies as you want! Admittedly, however, the most recent movies can only be watched on SKY for an additional charge of $6.99 each and they are not in HD, I wonder why this would be the case?

So, good luck with your new TiVo, it sounds great, but let's know more about the movie quality, and choice of recent release movies as time progresses.

p.s. What happens with TiVo if your broadband internet goes down? Does the picture disappear because I read somewhere that your TiVo must be connected to broadband at all times and that it "phones home" all your remote control commands??? Perhaps not true?

Yep, its cool allright.
I've got as far as:
Got it all up and running. (no HDMI cable included, lucky I had a spare)
Activated everything including Caspa. Took about 60 mins from when box opened to viewing TV.
Activated Home networking and downloaded the PC software, Haven't played with that yet
Got the Tivo remote running my TV with power,volume and AV changes between hdmi.
(can just use the one remote for TV and Tivo now )
Then have just been seeing what everything does, early days yet.
Colours are deeper and different than MySkyhdi which i noticed straight away.
The menus are a lot more responsive and faster than the freeview menus. It has its own style EPG, nothing like freeview.

Haven't tried any D/led movies yet or d/led TV Shows for the quality yet sorry..
Tivo uses freeview for live tv so I don't know about it stopping if broadband goes down, i'll try it later and see..

All in all happy sofar

Hey mate - can you try logging into www.mytivo.co.nz - firing up TiVo Genie and sending a doing a remote record request.

I did a whole bunch about 4 hours ago and they've all failed with...

CONFLICT: A problem was detected with your request

MORE DETAILS: It seems we have not yet received a confirmation from your TiVo media device - that doesn't mean it hasn't been scheduled. Please check the To Do List on your TiVo media device for confirmation.

But nothing added upon checking... maybe have to wait for Home Networking activation???

Added another and it's saying "Pending confirmation by your TiVo Media Device
Requested 35 minutes ago"

EDIT: I also set the "Only send if an error occurs" flag, but received no email... :(

If your broadband goes down the picture will be fine and it will even record your shows -- for a time. Eventually however it will run out of EPG data and stop recording.

It does "phone home" regularly but basic functionality isn't reliant on this.

Sorry, this program is not available in the channel lineup for this TiVo Media Device.

Perhaps it takes 24 hrs after the first update

How do you know this? What does the "housekeeping" involve? There is an interesting Wikipedia article about TiVo here, but these comments may not apply to New Zealand TiVo?

These are series 3 TiVo's. Whatever that means.

I don't care what info they gather - more power to them. I think only the paranoid conspiracy theorists do. And John Minto.

I also don't care how or when it phones home. As long as it works and it records my stuff so I can still operate it while drinking heavily.

I think that's the beauty of TiVo. It's not like MagicTV or HTPC. You just ask it to do something and it does it. It's not Microsoft.

Woohooo.... yes, overnight the MEDIA ACCESS KEY arrived and all my Genie requests now say "REQUEST CONFIRMED: Successfully confirmed by your TiVo Media Device"

AND, photos now streaming slideshows from my PC.

Hold on, one of the reasons Sky passed on TiVo was because TiVo wasn't able to report on viewing data?
