It's very good value, infact I don't think there was a PVR with those features for less. With the my skybox again, don't they make you pay a setup cost which is a lot more than the tivo purchase price, and you never actually own the device either.

Skolink: Thanks for the list Reven, I have always assumed PC based solutions would have a very low WAF, and so have not investigated for a few years. I admit I forgive the TiVoHD some of its faults knowing how good it should be (since we also have a Series 1 TiVo). There is still the issue of cost, size, noise, and power consumption of a PC based solution.
That reminds me, I must update XBMC on the XBox...although I have discovered it cannot handle Full HD video...(and the TiVoHD media player functionality is a hassle).
TiVo has the sexiest remote though (or am I wrong on that too?).

personally i always liked the classic MCE remote, nice buttons (soft rubber, logitech ones are hard plastic), backlit, learns tv power + volume. has shortcut keys to recordings tv guide etc. tivo remote was pretty good, i didnt like the arrow buttons look and the curve was a little much for me, but good how it learns power, input and volume for your tv. so i wouldnt say tivo had the sexiest, but its a good remote.

I realise we are getting off topic but...would a PC based solution completely combine the functionality of my XBMC XBox, TiVoHD, Analoge TiVo (with Prime EPG), Dreambox (with 'educational' addons), and laptop with Skype? I want to mount the TV on the wall, but the prospect of running so many cables puts me off.

yeah a HTPC would do that, my setup is a server computer with a quad DVB-S2 tuner (records around 28 or so shows at once in theory, ive only ever tested with 7, and that was on 3 of the tuners) and then i have small clients (mostly mac minis) around the house that connect to that. that way i dont need aerial inputs for all the TVs and they still get EPG, tv and even sky tv. so all my tvs can watch netflix (i love netflix), movies/tv shows on harddrive that ive ripped from dvds, live tv/recording. i can schedule shows on my computer or ipad from anywhere, i can even chat to a IM bot on msn to record shows. there is skype plugins for a few PVRs, i dont use skype so not sure how well these work.
ideally i would like to get ATV2 as my clients and use xbmc, but the pvr branch of xbmc isnt stable enough yet.

mattwnz:I think they were meaning standalone PVR boxes, rather than media PCs. I agree that the tivo interface isn't the most pretty or feature rich, but it does what it does reasonably well, and for the price at the time when they were discounted to $380, they were great value. It is also not as laggy as other PVRs I have seen.

well a tivo is a computer running a version of linux, so thats debately. so if you had 3 rooms that would be about $1200 and you couldnt really share things, if you had a computer for about $600 to $800 for the server then $170 ATV2 clients it can be cheaper to go that way.
also its not like having a windows interface on the machine, sure you may see windows loading when you reboot (if you're using windows), but once the PVR is launched its just a pretty tv interface and most computer PVRs are stable now and wont crash. rebooting a computer is faster than rebooting a tivo box (boy is that slow). personally i would buy a mac mini second hand off trademe, get a usb tuner and use that as a PVR over a tivo. its a lot smaller, a lot sexier, and has way more features. but yes there is more setup to do than a tivo so for parents/grandparents etc yeah go with a tivo/my sky. but if you're on geekzone, then PVR all the way.

seriously if you have a decent data cap, sign up to unblock-us.com (they have a trial) and netflix, its awesome, they dont have everything (kinda like sky where they have so many shows/movies over a period (just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more) and then they updating the catalog) and that should be reason enough to use a PC PVR (or use a PS3/Xbox360 if you have one of them)

this is turned into a long post. err but to sum up, tivos/mysky have their place/audience and if you want something you should never have to touch and anyone can use/manage a PC PVR might not be the best solution, but if you dont mind installing software once and maintaining very seldom and you do want to watch avis etc then forget the clumsy way to put them onto a tivo, and just get a PC PVR. and a PC PVR is the easiest/cheapest to trial, a DVB-T USB tuner off trademe are as little as $25, and im sure most of you own your own computer:P

Yes i understand that i dont own the sky box

I was given a second tivo buy someone who didnt watn it due to the picture dropping in and out
I kept it for my bedroom its good in there

BUT after 3 tivo units then no softwear fix until JAN im not paying 20 dollars a month for something that dno't work id rather take the refund and have sky

Plus FREEVIEW tv sucks !!!!!!

I do agree with the 350 price that was great but i didnt pay that i paid 799 for mine

It is strange that you have had 3 fail. I am still on my first and it is over a year old. It does occasionally have bugs and glitches, but then again media PCs do too.

You are still covered by the CGA after the warranty runs out anyway. These sorts of things should last 3 years minimum, especially as they are valued at around the $800 mark,

Yeah... well my vcr's lasted 10 yrs and one 15 and its still going !

And I suppose since im keepin the free tivo i got given im only half sayin good by to tivo?

I might get rid of that and the home networking package and just have the sky
too many things pluged in everythwere

hey guys if you want a really good deal,have a look on tradme,there selling tivo's for $200 to 250!as you say telecom are giving them away on a 24 month term,so thier just dumping them on trademe unused in the box,i got mine for 240.

Picture and sound quality is better than competing PVRs (Zinwell, Magic, JCMathews etc. ) too

I did for a while but my GF at the time made me turn them off.
I don't miss them.

Big problem with TiVos is their hard disks failing as you can't put them on standby as they are always recording the last 30 minutes of the last channel you watched. If there was a true standby these things would last way longer..

Oh i didnt know that old eyes I thought when you put it on standby it wentoff but it don't.... Because it still records... telecom are now giving their customers free tivos to stay with them on a 24 month contract that will get a few more ppl sucked into stayin with them lol

Mind you they are getting cheaper

As explained to me by a TiVo employee standby just turns off the video output to the TV..
