I'd go a step further and say the Tivo UI is considerably better than my MySky. Heck even my 10 year old series 1 Tivo has a better UI than Mysky. However the lack of content and being terrestrial only meant it was no use to me.

If only you could use a Sky subscription with Tivo.....I'd be in heaven.

Good luck with the Panny solution JimmyH. Be nice if, in NZ, we could subscribe to a provider (Sky) and use the hardware of our choice.

if you think the Tivo UI is better than Mysky, which i agree with, checkout Windows Media Centre

i have a tivo, i laugh at mysky it is pathetic user experience

out of all the TV UIs I've tried i still prefer MCE

TiVo would of course compatible with the IGLOO service, but that will never be implemented.

You can use the hardware of your choice with Sky, if you have the right subscription card, and choose the right hardware (eg Dreambox, or PC with DVB-S cards).

There is a real dearth of content on FV, and I watch the FV channels only rarely, and virtually never live. Most of what I watch is Sky. Tivo is a freeview box, its not going to work with Sky. In fact you will be hard pressed to find any sort of device that can record from Sky and do what you proposing. I don?t see how this can be a Tivo issue? Sky is locking everyone else out by forcing you to make use of their crappy mysky box.

Firstly, I don't have a MySky box, because I don't want to pay recurring costs for a box that doesn't do what I want. I just have a standard Sky box, and use a DVD recorder to deal to the rest. MySky boxes won't do DLNA, won't burn disks etc.

Secondly, I'm not hard pressed to find devices that will record from Sky and do what I am proposing at all - the Panny DVD and BluRay recorders do this "off the shelf". They do it, do it well, and do it cleanly.

Thirdly, I think you may have misread what I was trying to say. My point was that, relative to a Tivo box, the recorder does everything Tivo does and offers a whole bunch of fairly compelling additional features as well. Plus, unlike Tivo, it's not an orphaned product with an unclear EPG life expectancy etc, so I'm happier to chuck money that way then spend more buying the networking package off Hybrid etc. Moreover, unlike the Tivo it doesn't flog itself buffering random channels 24/7 when I don't want it to.

I didn't dislike the Tivo. It was nice hardware and a nice concept. If it had external inputs, and if Hybrid/TVNZ had supported it properly and not tried to gouge users to get simple networking connectivity, then I would have bought 2-3 and probably been happy. If they had also included an ad-skip button, which they could have easily as they didn't go for certification, I probably would have been a real fanboy. Sadly, they fluffed the whole thing, start to finish.......... (unless, of course, you regard CASPA as compelling

)

Agreed. There are a few nice to have features Tivo could do with. Recording to DVD though is not something I would regard as one of them. In fact I don’t see the point? Do people still do this? Why record shows off sky or freeview to DVD? All it would do is add to the cost of the decoder, and only maybe 2% of people will actually use it. DVD and blueray recorders are for exactly that purpose. I like them separate.

As for your DLNA point, yes that would be nice.

But if you have the home networking package is DLNA really necessary?

Had a look at the Panny DMR-XW390. $499 from Noel Leeming. It looks like a good box.

And as mentioned previously I don’t see thats wrong with recording 24/7? Why does that drive some people nuts? My PC’s at home run 24/7 too.

No I don’t use Caspa. But I use Tivo for freeview only. We have Nettflix and Hulu+ for all our other entertainment and it costs a fraction of what we use to pay foor sky, with far better content.

Yes, I regard it as gouging. I don't want/need their software or anything else. It should have been set up in the base spec so it worked a simple network share - connect it to the network and you can see/transfer the files on the drive. It's perfectly fair for them to make money - by selling the hardware, selling additional services (EPG if they want, a decent version of CASPA or whatever), and selling addons (expansion drives, WiFi adapters, fancy remotes etc). I regard artificially gimping the product with an electronic lock, and then charging over $NZ 100 to remove the lock, as gouging.
