I'm curious as to why you advise this.

I have upgraded both of my Tivos and each time I just used the existing image from the old HDD as a starting point.

Darren is obviously good to contact though if your old HDD is broken.

My advice to anyone who is thinking about upgrading their HDD when it breaks is to just upgrade to 2TB now and keep the old drive as a backup. The 2TB upgrade has to be the best $150 I've spent recently.

I advised it because The Tivo Dr has a Tivo image.

I'm not a computer geek and found the whole upgrade process intimidating! But after getting the step-by-step instructions it was very simple and easy to do as long as the instructions are followed carefully.

So for me, the advice is based on experience - I didn't have a Tivo image and today still wouldn't know how to get one off an existing drive.

But I do have a 1TB drive working 6 months later without issue and I am confident should the need arise that I could it again without the same nerves.

But I would start with the Tivo Drs image - it worked easily for me from there.

Yes, you are right, it helps to be a computer geek although there are step by step instructions on how to do the upgrade using the original drive as an image source.

Good to know the Tivo Dr is there for those who need him.

Maxcat: I have a couple of DLNA devices (WDTV, Vulkano, Foobar on PC).

The Home Networking Package on my Tivo gives me pictures, music and other video material. I enjoy having it on the one device instead of switching between the other DLNA devices.

But what else would a DLNA link do that isn't covered by the Home Networking Tivo with pyTivo?

Off the top of my head:
1. Let you connect the networked media player (WDTV etc) to the STB without having to use a PC or PyTivo in the middle (that's what I do), and
2. If you have a unit with external AV inputs, timer record from Sky etc and send that over DLNA as well.

Don't get me wrong, in many ways I like the TiVo. It's great hardware (although external AV inputs like the series 1 units had would be nice). It is slightly let down by stuff missing from the software - DLNA, the 60-second skip the Americans are allowed on their units etc. The biggest issue with TiVo was never the product - the product was basically a good one - it was the awful and inexplicable strategy and marketing blunders Hybrid made when they introduced it.
