Could be right in the home networking package. Initially it was included and I don't think you could buy a TiVo for a while without the HNP.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

It's OK hardware. Pity it doesn't seem to be hackable, so that something like Mediaportal or XBMC could be put on it with the tuners being used, in the event that the EPG data ceases.

I mothballed mine a couple of years ago, as I didn't like the the UI or lack of external inputs, in favour of a Panny recorder. In fact, I think it's still in the garage. I should exhume it, test it, and put it on Trademe over Christmas while there's still a market for them laughing

Behodar:
Skolink: You're not referring to the thing that was called the T-Box are you? That has the worst UI I've ever used! I agree it has similarities (other than usability).

Ugh, I'd heard that it used to be bad but was improved with updates, but this doesn't sound good! Although hopefully you don't have to go into "Now Playing" to find your recordings (it took ages for my parents to get used to that when they got their Tivo).

A bit off topic - might want to create a new thread in the proper forum but I've heard rumours T-Box will be no more soon...

So it's pretty much un-hackable you say? I bet someone in NZ could somehow spoof the EPG data? If we all got together all us geeks could think of something, right!?

You can make some mods (eg install EndPadPlus) if you replace the PROM chip with a hacked one. I've replaced the chip on one of ours but never got around to installing anything.

We got our Tivo in early 2012 so nearly 3 years ago for $199. It's great, really easy to use. It's still going strong and hopefully continues to do so as I can't see any decent replacement PVR.

Hopefully be the time it needs replacing broadcast TV will be dead and we can just replace it with a streaming device.

Please dear god let that be true  and it being replaced with something decent.

It doesn't surprise me at all, and wouldn't be surprised if they just resell mysky instead, which looks to be a good reliable product. Wonder how long igloo will be around for as well, that hardware is very poor, mine is always needing to be rebooted after freezing.

I guess if the EPG goes, then Spark will then start to meter people again who use their broadband service. That has been one of the benefits of the tivo, where Spark have been providing unmetered data for several years. Apparently it was to stop earlier this year, but it is still unmetered. Not a big cost difference though now between a 40GB plan and a unmetered plan, so wouldn't be a great loss for the unmetering to end.

Oh come on..  On a 150Gig / plan  the loss of  non metered EPG will hurt you??

Exactly the same comment here.

Mine is still going strong.  I don't like much about it, but at $199 even today it's still a good buy.  Can't see it failing unless the support EPG goes down.

I don't know what the deal is with the company providing the EPG data, and how long they are obliged to continue supplying it.
I'm not even sure if TIVO themselves in the US are involved/supporting this at any level.
Certainly a good business lesson on how not to market and capture the market with what is essentially a very capable device.

Hopefully if it does fail, some clever sod will supply it and we can point the device somewhere else to get the info etc.

His point is that TiVO EPG guarantees an unlimited broadband. Of course the EPG itself won't hurt but people who have a TiVo and get all-you-can-eat broadband as a side effect will lose the whole thing.

How much data would you actually be consuming with this?
The EPG is a txt file really, unless you're using the movie download thingy?
I tried that and it swallowed my free movie so I cancelled it after the trial period.
