alvin: telecom should have done an extensive training on their staff regarding tivo before the launch.. I went to a telecom store and played with tivo, I tried to ask some questions and most of the replies i got was "I don't know because tivo was just launched today.."

quite frustrating...

While frustrating, remember most of these stores are actually third party - not Telecom employees...

nevertheless, they are still point of sale and considered as salesmen..  a fair bit of knowledge of the products they are selling is always expected of them

Try asking me, I have had training, but I don't know if it is 'extensive' enough to keep up with the sort of questions that often come up on Geekzone.  Not everyone who walks into a store is a super geek :)

most of my questions were out of curiousity as it was my first time playing with tivo and no manual available.. i forgot most of them.  one question i asked was why was the resolution appearing in the display is 576p (or was it 576i?) for all the channels..  is this the resolution of the lcd tv?

thanks

Output from Component is 576i, HDMI you can also choose 720p or 1080i as well.

you can lock it to 1080i in settings then it will always stay at the highest resolution.

I just spent 10mins playing around again - I can only get 576i out of the component ports, no matter what I set the Tivo to. HDMI allows me any of the settings - 576i, 576p, 720p or 1080i.

If anybodies results are different, I'd love to hear.

Basically, all of the above. If their TV setup is the same as ours, our TV can do 1080i, which obviously could allow for higher resolutions. I *think* the reason for this is not for a lack of HDMI ports, but if you were a customer who came in, saw Lost (for example) in 1080 and thought WOW, took it home and could only get 576 for other shows, surely you would complain? Misleading advertising?

I have Freeview HD and a 1080p Plasma (awesome) so will pass on my 2 cents worth.

When I chnage the TV from one HDMI input to another, the TV displays for a few secs, the resolution. Some Freeview is 576, some is 720m some is 1080.

Based upon this, and that the TIVO is essentially a Freeview Hard Drive Recorder, I expect a full HD TV to show the res "at that time"  Not all of Freeview is full HD all the time, depends on what the channel is displaying.

Similarly, if it is in HD and you dont use HD capability, you won't get that available high res, i.e. using other than HDMI

You clearly understand it, but Average Joe might hear "HD" and come to the concluson that it will be HD all the time.  However, if it is displayed in 576, then they will only get better quality so they don't feel cheated.

Yep, its all in the marketing of the marketing experts, and expectations of the masses, who are not generally the experts

I see threads on Sky quality, and it all makes no sense to me. My Freeview HD, playing HD is magic, it cannot get any better it is that clear and detailed. I have Sky Digital, not MySky HDi ( getting that next Monday), and a Sky HD movie on my old school Sky Satellite is very very good.

Over time, HD will be a standard, but now, whether on Sky HDi or Freeview its not all HD, not even close.

IMO its about cost, content you desire, and quality. Freeview and Sky , ala TIVO and MySky HDi have choices, but the first key is content that you want.
