old3eyes: Mine died after 11 months and they're not enduser replaceable..

They are fairly easy to replace. You just use the utility called WinMFS to copy the software (and recordings if you want to) to the new drive. If it has completely crashed then you would need someone (like me) to provide a HDD image to write to your new drive. A set of Torx drivers are as cheap as $7.50 at Jaycar.

and there is tons and tons to watch that aint been on tv before. some of it has but there is heaps of educational stuff on sky

Sky beats tivo hands down?

I would expect nothing less as one is a paid service the other is free. ?You must be on a great deal as everyone I know that has sky tells me the basics are around $45. ?You then pay for everything else. ?It's kinda like buying a car then having to pay extra for wheels, stereo, lights etc.

I work it out like this if I understand the website correctly (not including any special deals, installation, one-off, box office HD tickets etc)

mysky HDI basic package $63
Platinum Movies $32
Platinum sport $34
Total p/m $ 129

Over 10 years: $15, 480

vs.

TiVo: FREE (and I have it in more than 1 room...for FREE)

Plus without having to decide between a squllion channels I have lot more free time to spend downloading porn, torrenting, and drinking heavily :-)

You can hire or buy a lot of dvds/blurays for the 15k too, and hiring dvds, you will usually get to see the movie before it ever comes onto sky. Many people who have sky, also hire dvds or go to the movies too anyway.

Ive got 2000 gig of movies here
I dont need to hire them and Iv'e never met anyone who has had sky full packages that long

And ya wont be lol when there is no content for tivo when it goes bust :p

You are clever as most people wouldnt be able to do that

You missed my point. There is no real standby. So if you go away for a week that old mechanical hard disk is grinding away for that week recording the last channel watched . Normal recorders can be put on true standby so that the hard disk goes to sleep. How much do you expect to pay outside of the warranty period when the disk dies??

I get your point, and I don't disagree that it would be a handy feature, but if I went away away for a week I would be even more likely to have my TiVo running to record all the programs I would otherwise miss. If you don't want to do that then for a week away I would be powering it off completely, along with everything else in the house.

Don't know why TiVo couldn't do this, power down the drives, it already pre-decides what it is going to suggest for you, it isn't a spur of the moment decision, why it couldn't just come on to just record those then go back to sleep if it had been put on standby.

My first two PVRs would do this.

I love my Tivo. Heaps of storage, easy to use remote, menus are better than mysky

There is no way my girlfriend and I could afford to pay for mysky and rent in Auckland. Aside from the extra tuner (and channels) I wouldn't go back to sky if it were free.

I love being able to log on to mytivo on my phone and be able to record shows remotely (I think Sky can do this too now tho...). I like that I can flick between tuners and have live rewind on both channels (i.e. if I am watching the news one one channel 10m behind live TV, then at 710 I want to watch shortland street, if the other tuner is on channel 2 I can switch over, and still rewind that channel 2 without having to have recorded that channel).

Sucks about Prime not having a guide tho. That would make Tivo AWESOME.

Also - how about having internet access to TVNZ on demand? surely an easy firmware update would sort this out?

As TVNZ part owns tivo/hybrid in NZ, tvnz ondemand should really be on the tivo imho

TiVo (Hybrid TV Services) doesn't provide any content (other than Caspa), just the EPG. If Hybrid goes bust the ozTiVo community will come up with an alternative (as they currently do for Series 1 TiVos).

Well I only got sky as it was half price for a year.
And its got prime and maori tv conent so I dont see why tivo can't.

As for the casper thats the biggest joke ive ever seen
Since tivo came out all it has done is got smaller and smaller

What part of hard disk failure don't you under stand. When it's dead it's dead and no amount of cloning software will fix it. I did lots of research and only found people who have successfully upgraded their drives to larger ones but never anyone that had had a complete failure as the OS is on the HD as well..

The most common symptoms people experience with 'hard disk failure' is corrupted recordings or playback problems. The OS occupies only a small proportion of the HDD, and is on a separate partition. It hardly gets written or read at all, compared to the section which stores the video data, so is far less likely to 'wear out' and get bad sectors. There are actually two copies of the OS on the TiVo, on a partion each, mainly so that if a software upgrade fails, the TiVo will fall back to the good version.
Agreed that if it doesn't boot, no recovery is possible, but in most cases the hard drive will only be mostly dead, recoverable albeit with loss of recordings.
Hard drive failures in the TiVoHD are all too common, IMO due to the cheapness of the drive used.

So I just got another one of these on TradeMe for $205. Apologies if I outbid anyone here.

This is going into a room without wired internet connection. I have the wireless adapter from my original release TiVo which I never use. Am I right in assuming that this will work with the new one just for internet connection to get EPG if nothing else?
