Good streamers connect to the TV over HDMI.

Recording this (in HD) by connecting an appropriate recording device that also disregards copy protection is trivially easy to do, at a cost of around $2-300 in equipment. While I haven't yet done it myself, there are many threads on video discussion fora that tell people how to do it.

It fixes it for normal or easy use. If someone is going to have to pay hundreds, and require technical knowlege, it isn't a threat, compared to anyone with a DVD player that can rip a DVD with free software.

It will be a shame if they go, They are pretty much the best freeview STB recorders you can get.

Couldn't agree more. The only snag if comparing to TiVo in the US is they charge a regular subscription to maintain the EPG which I don't think the average kiwi would want. On the flip side they also have a serious online MyTivo interface with a billion more features than we have. I sometimes browse what they have in the US and get a little depressed but they're amazing - virtually a full entertainment media centre sourcing from almost any broadcast or streaming platform.

If only all the broadcasters would get together and put their backing into one device that can record everything from any broadcast network rather than different set top boxes for everything. The US models have slots for subscription TV cards with both terrestrial, satellite and cable (que Sky satellite and Vodafone's cable network obviously with a lot of core software rewriting). Perhaps it could be the replacement to the epic joint failure between TVNZ and Sky that was Igloo that can't record? Did you know the current models are up to SIX TUNERS! Take that MySky!

In NZ no one now. I suspect when they were selling for about $800 some of that price (say 60%) was to go towards the upkeep of the EPG and software updates and pay Dan .. If it meant my TiVo could keep going and / or I could buy a new one I would be happy to pay a small monthly fee..

I presume that whoever was distributing it in NZ paid for a contract for a certain term. The question really is how long that term was, and when it ends? I am sure people would be happy to pay a bit to keep it going, but it would be difficult to setup such a payment system for what is probably quite a small group of people using them.

Shouldn't be too difficult. They did it with CASPER..

I think if they roll out a subscription fee for the EPG then they then have to also roll out new hardware. Yes it would be nice to have the latest but I was thinking more of what happens when hard drives start failing - and they will given they're getting on in age now spinning 24/7 - how would TiVo's get repaired? I know with some pretty technical know-how you can replace them yourself but for the average user I don't see that happening. Once they start dying off there will be a cut off point of either ramping up the subscription or pulling the plug. I will cry.

Make it so it can get guide off frewview signal, should be able to do it with firmware update, then there is no cost to maintain guide at device level.

No sign of support for guide ending soon, so I'm not going to worry about it till it happens.
If it happened tomorrow I'd try and get money back on Tivo's, not sure if would be successful but I'd give it ago.

It's a great machine, just wished could shut hard drive off when it's not needed, don't need it recording 24/7 just in case when turn it on I want to see start of program already on.

lol you mean via the EIT data that is currently broadcast to do just that on the Satellite service.

There was a huge stink in support of the MHEG5 EPG, promising all the extra things it was going to do and enable, and covering why EIT should not be expanded on the terrestrial service, (it's already there used for now/next event info), but non of that has eventuated here, other than the version for PVR units.

Argh, all this stuff makes me so mad. Shakes head in disbelief...
