Pause does work but it works different to just pressing pause. I saw a link (2009 so didn't copy it) that said that Live TV pause uses the TV tuner somehow, hence the silly way it works. It also mentioned Chase TV button, is that on OP's remote or settings?  (US article I assume)

Yes, well I wouldn't mind if I could change to the other tuner and use it after all it must be using the other tuner to do recording while you are in pause mode, but while u have it in the rewind live tv/pause mode it locks everything to that function and nothing else works on the remote.

Its not faulty so you cannot return it

Harvey Norman has a no questions asked, 14 day exchange policy. Of course you can return it.You may only get a store credit though, but from experience I have found this really depends on the store.

Thanks for the info, I just took it back to Harvey Norman and explained the pause function and they refunded straight away no questions asked. He said that they were hoping the pannys were going to replace the tivos...

I'll be a bit more cautious before I get a replacement now and make sure everything works.

Back to the good old Tivo, its going again :)

Awesome news. Thanks for writing about your experience, you have saved me from going down this exact same route.

LOL. I thought it was the end of October?

3 months to go, hopefully enough time for a better product to enter the market.

31 October is "in" October

Seems Panny just needs to tidy up some minor issues, that may be the next models released perhaps

Well the tech support guy I talked to this morning basically said all PVR's are like that and panasonic wont change it because they can't. He also said all models have been the same since they were released :(

BUT if they fix up that pause so it works when you push it instead of going thru that 5 step performance and free up all the other functions, I'll consider another one as everything else was ok.

Unless Fetch TV launch in NZ I am not sure there will be much better....but I do hope to be proven wrong, and will gladly replace the Pana's if so.

The experience with Panasonic, and I suspect most of the rest of the mainstream PVR's supports my theory that manufacturers where recorders are just a small segment of their portfolio only invest the minimum effort for functionality.  Whereas Tivo, Mysky and the likes of MythTv etc....the platform is their primary focus.

We never used the Tivo to watch live TV so the 30min replay etc was not a feature we exercised.  As a result it is not really missed in the Panasonic as we use it for two channel recording only, and by having 2 we can ensure plenty of coverage.  I only tried to use the feature briefly on the Panasonic but the lock out of other features/complexity meant I gave up early and left it.

If you get the pana 260's at the right price ....then setting two units up - with one being the primary recording unit and the other being the live TV and pause unit (even if it is fiddly) may be an option.

The frustrating thing with the Panasonic PVR platform surely it would not have taken a lot to sort this out after testing core use cases. And brickbats to the Panasonic support rep blaming it on Freeview, as noted Tivo consumed std freeview, it is only the Tivo EPG that is delivered via internet.

I'm really hopeful about the possible mods being discussed here.

@cafeg I definitely wasn't experiencing the same issues you were seeing with the pause function, but I will do some further tests tonight now. We will persevere with the Panasonic, because despite the quirks, it has good WAF in our household.

I did a quick call to Sky to price up their Mysky for Free to Air (FTA) use only.

1.  Need sky dish install (if not already present)

2. Require a months subscription to Sky basic ($49.91) and MySky fee ($15) - $64.91

3. Downgrade basic after first month, then FTA is $18.70 month plus the $15 MySky - $33.70

The Sky consultant confirmed FTA channels that are broadcast in High Def will be delivered in High Def without the need of a HD ticket.

So at over $400 per year this would be quite an expensive Tivo replacement.

Gets me thinking...

I can't/won't be robfishing because I don't live alone, my family aren't a pack of time-rich nerds and I don't want to be a full time support engineer working to an SLA of "it' s not recording, my show has started and I have to go out! Aaaaggggggggggghhhh".

But I think I would be happy to pay some annual amount to a group/company to keep the Tivo EPG alive (reliable ability to get the hardware serviced/replaced would seal the deal)

Alternatively, someone offering a locally supported Kodi box set up properly for Freeview PVR and ondemand could potentially take my money.

As I understand it a replacement model is coming out next month that includes Netflix, YouTube AND LIGHTBOX! Sorry I don't know whether it's a stand alone hdd recorder or includes Bluray/4K.

Its the usual dilemma of wait for the new model or get this model while it's cheap. Perhaps I'll get both, one for the lounge and one for the bedroom and link via dlna giving four tuners.

Curious now... A replacement model from which company to replace  ?
