Have a look on trademe, you may be able to pick up an unused one for $200. Some people received free Tivo's from Telecom and have never used them.

Alternatively Noel Leeming is probably your cheapest. Think they listed for $300, but go in when they have a special on.

I opted for Noel Leeming over Trademe, just so I got the warranty and CGA protection.

I think they will, and it appears oz have a new larger model that is out, so that may eventually make it's way to nz. Possibily they are still getting rid of the older stock here, as some of the boxes are still the old ones with the free home networking package on them that long expired. But the more people that buy them, the better. I recommend them over a regular freeview box, as not a big difference in price..

I would suspect that if you get a really nice sales agent, you may be able to talk him into giving you a discount to at least $250. :-)

May have been a loss leader to get people in store, although it was only advertised in store from what I saw at the time. An they didn't have anyone buying them when I picked up mine. Still a big pile. My first one was defective and kept crashing, but the second one has been perfect.

Personally I'd be going the store route over trademe for just that reason. Some swear by them and others just swear about them.

Yes exactly. Because they are hardrive recorders, there will be a failure rate on them, with a certain percentage dying in the first few days or DOA. If you buy on trademe, I would also want the receipt, for warranty coverage.

I went in last Friday and asked both shops for their best price on the TiVo - both NL and B&B (which are literally right next door to each other!) said $249, but when I tried to purchase one from NL they said the computer system would not let them override the $299 price. Despite asking them to discuss this with the manager (and waiting 20 minutes for this to happen...) I had no luck, so walked next door - they had it sorted out within a few minutes and I walked away one happy customer.

The other offer B&B gave me was a 3 year extended warranty to be included in the $299 price. That may be an option some purchasers would prefer but personally I'm happy to let the CGA be my friend in such circumstances.

Surely there is an increased risk of hard drive failure considering the TiVo is recording 24/7? My understanding is that even placing the unit in standby (only accessed through a menu, with no hard button) only turns off lights and the audio/video outputs, and not the ongoing recording feature. Plus there's the cost - I saw one figure quoted of power usage of 35w, but that was in the US context so unsure of the NZ model. This doesn't appear to be listed in the specs contained in the manual for some reason.

Yes that is the only drawback with this device is that it is on 24/7 and doesn't have a standby. Neither does it have a sleepmode for a quickstart. It simply keeps recording the last half an hour of what ever channels it was left on. I just accept it as the cost of having my PVR always at the ready. Even so I still put it in its so called sleepmode when I'm not using it just to make me feel I'm saving what I can.

The new model mentioned earlier, the "XL" version I think the Aussies call it, is as I understand it, the same as the current 320 hdd model with a 1TB drive in it. As we can all ready "upgrade" the current one to a 2TB internal drive or add an external drive it seem rather mute!

I am pretty sure there is a place in the menu to put it into standby. But when it is off, it won't download the EPG. The XL may be the same price as the 320, but he original price of the 320 was close to $800. PLus if you have home networking, you don't really need that extra storage.

Good that the Prime EPG is now available - might be enough to prod me into action and actually get around to connecting the Tivo I acquired in the boxing day sales.

Have to buy an aerial splitter first, as unlike every other STB on the market the Tivo seems to lack an aerial pass through for the TV and, since I don't plan on leaving it switched on when I don't want to record something in HD (that's what the Sky Box & DVD recorder are for) an aerial split is a necessity. More spaghetti wiring.....sigh!

Interesting that the box I got had a manufacturing date of September 2009 on it - no wonder that they were clearing them out at $199 if they had been sitting unsold in inventory for over two years. Pretty strong evidence of Telecom's abject failure to move the boxes, and no wonder TVNZ took heavy write-offs on the venture.

Once you've got the hang of TiVo, you won't bother with live TV anymore. Just plug the aerial into the TiVo and forget the TV's tuner (as we have).

Once you've got the hang of TiVo, you won't bother with live TV anymore. Just plug the aerial into the TiVo and forget the TV's tuner (as we have).

you will need the normal tv tuner though, if you want to record two shows, and watch a 3rd.
