What's the fast forward like on the Panasonic DMR-BWT760? The manual and past threads seem to have conflicting information?
The TiVo has three speeds of fast forwards what does the Panasonic have as the manual implies the New Zealand models doesn't have it, or is that just the 30 second jump feature?

I wonder if panasonic will make it pause when you hit the pause button, instead of going through what I went through when in pause live tv mode thats all you can use..

It was completely unusable for me... If you just used it as a recorder only it wasn't too bad but if you liked pausing channels it was no good.

I tried that last night. It was ok, apart from having to click, ok to go back to live TV, bit not too bad. The night before we had both tuners recording, so it was a no go

Since my experience with the panasonic DMR-BWT760 last week I have been looking more closely at what Tivo does..

On Tivo:

tivo caches the last 30 mins of the channel whichever that tuner is on.

all you do is go to that channel and hit pause and it pauses until you start it again.

If it is on a channel you are already recording you can access the full pause longer than the 30 mins back to where you started recording.

while doing this every other function on the remote control works.

ok on Panasonic:

You hit the pause button on the channel you are on nothing happens.

nothing is cached on either tuner until you push the live tv button. then after asking a couple of questions it starts caching that channel.

while you are doing that only that channel is cached and then the pause button works.

every other function is locked out apart from the live pause. it just says that function is not possible for whatever you push.

to do anything else you have to stop live pause and answer a couple more screens then you are back to the controller functions again.

so basically as soon as you change channels you have to manually start the live tv function or you have no pause on that channel and once you have started it you cant do anything else on the PVR until you stop it caching the channel you are on. If you stop it and exit out to change channels that cache is gone.

So it doesn't cache the last 30 mins of each tuner like Tivo does and panasonic told me what Tivo does is impossible and can't be done.

I think panasonic need to get hold of a Tivo and see what a real PVR does.

Sky does. While many hate Sky, and I have Sky and Tivo, and BWT720. If Sky can reduce prices, or you choose the $49 deal as I did when I went back, the cost, the sport, the extra channels, MySky, Sky Go is quite compelling. Its an all in one function. Ok, it doesn't have thumbs up, I assume search isn't as good as Tivo (I cant be arsed with the Tivo, the wife uses it, I just fix it when it stops working, restart all ok again, not common but not infrequent either)

So, whats the cheap rate you want Sky for? Add in a bit for sport. Add in a bit for CONVENIENCE. Does that make $49 ok? Nah, Yeah.

Well, all I want to use a PVR for is to pause and record FTA TV.

I don't need it for Netflix or the apps as you dont have to record them as they are there all the time.I just use the TV for Netflix and apps.

Netflix even pauses, Fast Forwards or Rewinds easily and starts where you left off before you went away.

So paying out $49 to sky and being on contract is out for me... its a Nah-Nah

So do you still have to hit rewind and then pause to pause a recorded program?

The DMR-BW760 might actually be ok for me. I hate having to twiddle my thumbs waiting for ads so I tend to partially record a program before I start viewing it. That way by the time I've caught up to the last lot of ads the program has about finished.
Again for me, not constantly caching channels 24 hours a day is good because I can put the pvr to sleep until it is awakened to record those programs I actually want to record and watch saving power and wear on the machine.

Watching a recorded program on the Panny 260 PVR the pause, stop, rewind and Fast Forward (FF) buttons work as expected.

Whilst the panny has 5 different FF speeds, it still fails to match the Tivo in a few aspects;

1. When I stop FF'ing on the Tivo it corrects a little bit and starts back a few seconds...makes it easier to manage.

2. The NZ Panny implementation does not have chapter markers to skip to (as per Tivo). Understand AU does....may be some freeview rules/interpretations?

3. When using the Tivo on first speed FF I still get closed captions displayed but no sound - this works ok for us (especially on some of the padded out shows). On the Panny you get sped up sound and no captions.

If you do not need 4K or ability to play/record BlueRay then the Panny 260's are better value, could almost get 2 for the price of a 700 series machines.

I am using the Panny 260's, but will still try and keep the Tivo's if a reasonable opportunity exists. If Tivo is dead we will live with the Panny's until I find something better.

Do the Panasonics have skip forwards and backwards buttons? Fast forward is the old, slow way of skipping things, inherited from VCRs. If you get the software to skip forward instead of fast forward, it is much easier to skip over ads. Since I started using skip on MythTV, I have never used fast forward ever again, as it is just too slow and clumsy by comparison. But I thought I heard somewhere that Freeview devices were not allowed to do skip and still be considered to be conforming to the Freeview specifications, as that made it too easy to skip the ads without seeing anything of them at all, which the broadcasters who make up Freeview definitely did not want as it would not please their advertisers.

I was just checking out manual recording on Tivo, its not that bad and lets you setup multipile weekly recording at a certain time and channel.

If I haven't found anything by oct 31, all i'll need is a channel listing book and away I go :)

I think there was some confusion about this, you may not have a internal clock to it that way after the shutdown.
