Unless I am missing something the theory is that will only be possible until there comes a time when you need to power off the device.  If it can't phone home it wont load so it can be used as a STB and will be bricked.

well, there is one way to find out, unplug the network cable and phone line and restart it..

I'll give it a go and see what happens. I can always plug it all back in again while it can still call home.

Good plan. I look forward to the result.

On reflection because it is already registered it *should* load without a network connection.  I guess the risk is that come d-day TiVo might 'de-register' all devices on the network, which could kick the registration out of any connected devices when they pull the pin?  I am please some better reports on the Panny are coming out as I can't see any other viable off the shelf replacement.

With the increase of on-demand options and streaming services recording is becoming less and less important and I have wondered about simply doing without it.  Maybe the answer for the OP is nothing - the idea of having to record live TV is obsolete?

Apart from a bit of the news all other stuff on FTA is recorded and played back later.  Not having a DVR  and having to use the likes of OnDemand with it's non skip ads  is not attractive.

scuwp - in addition to the issues with not being able to skip adds on the on-demand channels, the core use case for family is ability to record captioned programs.

As there is no legislative driver for content to be captioned (unlike most other developed countries) this is not provided in NZ.  I understand it is not always simple, and there is a cost to the service provider....but I believe content that is captioned on FTA should also be provided with a  captioned option for on-demand.

I have a free Lightbox sub, but do not use it as unlike Netflix it does not provide captioned programs.  Big ups to Netflix in this regard.

As the OP I have determined that currently the Panasonic 260 PVR is the best Tivo off-the shelf replacement for us and have invested accordingly.  It is not quite as WAF friendly as Tivo , and if something significantly better comes along I may change.  In addition I will try and keep our Tivo's running as long as possible post Oct 2017, the Pannys are an early grumpy wife mitigation technique.

The Panny EPG speed and Grid is superior to the Tivo, it has an Aerial out reducing the need for splitters, takes external USB HDD expansion and has good Netflix integration (better WAF than the Chromecast I have).

We also had to ensure we turned on the AV receiver before the TV, otherwise Tivo audio would be lost altogether, requiring a TV or Tivo reboot to fix. At this early stage, this also no longer appears to be an issue.

Damn. Was a bit premature on this one. Startup order is still important, with issues this morning requiring a TV reboot. Guess I need to finally get around to reconfiguring our old Universal remote to ensure this is a non-issue.

In my opinion, this thread seems to have become a bit purely focused on the Panasonic gear.

Then again, maybe that is because it is the only viable off-the-shelf alternative.

FYI, over on the "Dish TV aerialBox T2200 Official Discussion" (https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=179230&page_no=77#1850967) I asked for a comparison of the Dish TV T2200 v.s. Panasonic 260. Broadly speaking, both have issues, but the T2200 seems to be both more buggy and have more local support.

I don't own either, just a terminal Tivo, but I'm not keen on instability or lack of control, so I think I'll probably try converting a shelved laptop into a HTPC. A couple of USB tuners for ~$30 and some time, and I'll see. Oh, there is just the issue of the onboard graphics being fried, so I need to find an alternative graphics card via Mini PCI Express, ExpressCard or USB. Good geeky fun. On that note, the following threads were useful:

HTPC Replacement for ~$300:  https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=114&topicid=208847&page_no=38#1753376

I would do the same but that solution is not very wife or children friendly...

So im still waiting to see what happens with upgrading our Tivo thread or hoping a more stable commercial box by then.

As a past TiVo owner of 6 years & dreading the forthcoming closure of TiVo services I made an early investment in a couple of older model Panasonics. Both are pre-Freeview plus but in most other aspects perform similarly to the latest Panasonic offerings.

After 4 weeks of running both TiVos &  Panasonics side by side I stoppped the TiVo's from recording & only used a Tivo to replay existing recordings & used the Panasonics for all recordings going forward. Using the TiVo network software I then copied all recordings from TiVo to PC & made my Tivos redundant. Those recordings can be watched directly on PC or after file conversion can be streamed via DLNA to both Papasonic units. Also I can stream between both Panasonics.

Now almost 6 months since TDD (TiVo Dooms Day) was announced I have become perfectly at home with the Panasonic format & operation & accept that some small issues exist that aren't as good as TiVo & embrace the Panasonic features that surpass the functions of TiVo.  In short TiVo will be dead & gone & post 31st Oct Panasonic gives the best NZ sourced off the shelf package currently available.

I will also point out that some issues mentioned in forums are not the fault of Panasonic but inherent in the Freeview broadcasted EPG services.

Those who do not want to build a Media system or Pay to stream Internet sourced programs should seriously consider Panasonic as the best TiVo alternative with a relatively small learning curve between systems.

Unfortunately thread became Panasonic focused as most other "off the shelf" PVR/DVR manufacturers except DishTV and MySky (with a monthly fee) seem to have exited the NZ market with the uptake of on-demand services.

It would be good to have more competition in this space, but I am not holding breath.

Wife slowly getting used to the Panasonic....was helped by Tivo on TV1 having captions lagging by 60+ seconds the other week (Freeview on TV was OK) forcing her to use the Pana for Coro street.

Still a few rages...latest was when we selected the wrong show to record, and since it had already started I could not stop the recording....could not find a halt recording function.

I suppose it all depends on individual requirements.

whether you do a lot of recording or just live pause on the 2 tuners.

I myself only record stuff like allblacks games on prime ( which I also can do on my TV )

Nearly all of my usage is live pause between and using one tuner to keep it on the channel i want to watch next, which gives me a 30 mins buffer to use when i have finished watching the channel on the i am on.

Tivo is brilliant at doing this giving me a 30 min buffer on each tuner to use.

I tried doing this with a panasonic and it sucked as it only buffered the channel you were on after starting live pause, then you lost that buffer when you changed channels. It was also very slow at starting the pause whereas Tivo is instant.

so like i said it all depends on user requirements.

I find my tivo doesn't always buffer if I switch on the TV, and then try to rewind the channel it is on. So it must go into some form of sleep mode when not active.

To stop the recording, watch the channel, live, that is being recorded then press stop.
