Ta D3, will try that.  Too used to Tivo and I don't tend to use the recorders for live watching.

I haven't seen this mentioned , has anyone tried using an Android box with a DVB S/T tuner connected to a hard drive?

I realise its only a single tuner but you can top it up with on demand.

Thanks for posting the thread. I got my parents a new panasonic recorder for $399 last weekend. They really struggle with technology and a TiVo took about 3 weeks for them to learn. They picked up the new unit in one day and said in some ways its easier to use, just need to ignore other options within the menu that they don't need to use (it appeared overwhelming at first). 

So if anyone out there has questions or family that need help moving away from TiVo I can recommend the panasonic PVR units. Noels is running super low on stock as many people are looking for TiVo alternatives atm.

A DishTV T2200 beats the Panasonic recorders easily.

The remote control is the biggest problem on all DishTV but if you replace it with one of their newer $30 remotes or a harmoney remote they are different completely.

Was this at NLs? I've not seen it come down to that price recently on PriceSpy. My sister's wanting to get one to replace a TiVO, but has been waiting for a good price...

I realised after I'd posted the above I had been thinking of the price point for the Panasonic dropping to $299, which it reached around Xmas time last year - it's rarely reached that sort of price this year.

I managed to pick up a DMR-BWT760 earlier in the year for $495, but they have been nowhere near that ever since, in fact pretty much double that now. I think the retailers realise there are a lot of Tivo owners looking for replacements now

The Warehouse were selling DishTV T2200's for $199 but are currently for $249.  Guess they're selling off stock in anticipation of their new box due out Q1 next year.  Not quite sure why Noel Leeming seem to think people will pay $429 for the same unit.

That doesn't surprise me.  My sister and I bought one for our parents from Noel Leeming.  To our surprise they price matched The Warehouse pricing given one company owns the other so cashed in some True Rewards points (ASB) and earned some Flybuys points.  The guy at the time was even surprised it was $199 but said they'd honour it.  When it came time to buy my own I bought direct from The Warehouse as it had sold out online so no price matching for me.

So I gave away my old Tivo to sonyxperiageek, and thought we'd get by without a PVR while I'm waiting for a good deal for an off the shelf unit.

You know where I'm going with this - after a couple of months of looking I came to realise we didn't need a PVR at all. So the best replacement for a Tivo is - not having one. Personal view obviously.

Yes NLs. TiVo service ends soon so I would've purchased regardless of price. Can't have mum missing coro st!

Latest news is that the expected final official software update for the Tivo has just begun being pushed out. This was expected. Here are the words of Tivo Dan (remember him?) 

"Just tidy up post service, fix a few things that might have been ugly post end of service, and use Network time servers to set time instead of the mothership Haven't checked if we are saying publicly or not, but the patches are just maintain usability/sanity post service shut off, were not disabling anything"

This doesn't impact on work being done by the community developers, but it does mean there will be some Tivos floating around with the current version software (Vers: 11.3b8-01-2-663) and most are expected to receive the new version any day (Vers: 11.3b10.2017.10.11-1506-01-2-Z-663) 

Obviously the developers will update the patch to identify which version software your Tivo is running, and apply the correct version patches. This is one of the reasons the new software hasn't been released prior to now.

Stocks of the PROM chips for the hardware portion of the mod are extremely low in NZ thanks to Australia and NZ's incredibly slow mail service. Hard to believe it, but Melbourne to NZ takes 2-3+ weeks by Airmail! Everyone will get theirs as soon as chips and/or sockets arrive.
