have a panyy mini dv tape recorder camera wanting to put my tapes onto a dvd any help on ways of doing this laptop has no firewire port options buying a dvd recorder? downloading to pc via usb then burning? any help appreicated hope im in the correct forum

many thanks for that the first item does that need to be installed on the laptop or do u go firewire port to firewire then usb to laptop the 2nd item looks to have a s video slot as well from what i have read the firewire gives the best reprduction of results or u think the cbales would work fine? have downloaded a programme called windv will try this all out thanks again

If you have a laptop then the first PC Card device is what you want. The DV camera will output the signal from the tape in DV format which you can capture on your PC using a variety of programs. I used Sony Vegas when I had to capture a ton of DV format tapes.

After that you can do what you like with the raw video.

I used to do this years ago, using Virtualdub or TMPGEnc Worked well once I had the correct encoding settings. I'm sure these days it is largely automatically set.

However, I now use a DVD Recorder, far easier and quicker. The menu screens and layouts are more limited but perfectly fine. Simple editing to trim, split is via remote, a nice easy solution. My recorder is Panny, my Mini DV is Sony.

That brings back memories!

The problem with those methods is that they confine you to MPEG2 compression pretty much out of the gate and whatever setting you chose in Tmpgen or the DVD recroder.

If the video is in DV format (as the OP has), then using a IEEE1394 card allows him to transfer them as they were recorded to his PC. He can then store the raw video as an archive and output any format he wants for a particular usage.

For example I helped my brother convert some 50 odd tapes; a mixture of D8 and Hi8. The D8 tapes I just passed the output over IEEE1394 to my computer and recorded the raw AVI files in Vegas.

The Hi8 I passed through a Canopus ADV110 which converted the analogue video to DV format and analogue audio to 16/48 and output the signal over FW to the PC. I just then gave him the 1.5TB drive of captured material(!) for him to do what he wanted.

I doubt if he would ever output MPEG2 for DVD and probably leave it digital format, possibly encoding as H.264 for storing and viewing on a srever.

It is plugged into the laptop PCMCIA (or PC Card slot). I guess the confusion is, it provides both a Firewire (IEEE1394) connection and a USB connection on it. It will not plug into a USB slot.

You would then just connect the output from your DV camera (over the Firewire port or iLink as Sony calls it) to this FW port on the card. You might need to find a FW cable that has mini 4 pin FW on one end (which is likely to what your camera has) to a normal 6 pin cable at the PC end.

im looking to find the slot on my pc lol hp dv6 would it be called a sd ms pro mmc xd is the only kind of open slot i can find does it just plug in there?

What is the exact model of HP laptop do you have? The card referenced earlier in the post is an express card slot which you might not have. The other type of card is PC Card (or PCMCIA) which are wider. You might not have them either.

If you have neither on the laptop then you are not going to be able use the Firewire connection and might have to resort to analogue capture which will do but it's not as good.

Looks like that particular unit has no PC Card or Express card port so the Firewire solution is not going to work.

Best option short of borrowing a PC with a Firewire port, buying a PCI Firewire port and installing that in a desktop is to get something like this

thanks for your help is appreciated..there is a slot on this laptop but no idea about it u think the usb thing is not same quality is that the issue with it? what about buying a cheap dvd recoder and burning to disc? any thoughts or would u go the usb route and burn from there or back it all up on portable harddrive as well as discs
