It's good to see a major 'traditional' brand being first cab off the rank in producing a mirrorless full frame interchangeable lens camera if for no other reason than that it might chivvy Canikon to get off their lazy behinds and get with the 21st century.

The SL has some attractions but the price is likely to be prohibitive, even as a professional who can expense it before tax etc. The body price will probably not be far adrift from the top Canikon offerings, but the lens prices will be steep: only the 24-90 will be available at launch (although M, T and R lenses can be used, T with no adaptor) and indicative pricing for that being circa US$4500 alone.

I'm making noises to see if I can get to have a play with one when a demo unit turns up, but I suspect this may be a camera that waiting for the second generation version is the wisest course.

Nope.
The sample images at DPReview taken with a US$5,000 "kit" (variable aperture) zoom aren't as good compared side to side with a Nikon D610.
Sony have been making mirrorless full-frame cameras (with AF and EVF) for a while now.
Apart from the red dot, what do you get for that price?  If you had some mission-critical job to shoot in adverse conditions, I'd trust a D4s or 1Dx long before I'd trust a Leica. If image quality is critical, then you can do better at a fraction of the price.

Personally, I wouldn't take DP Review sample shots as a valid method of evaluating a $10,000 camera...

Not the sample shots - the studio images.
The Leica SL's Cmosis Belgian made sensor clearly lags current FX sensor performance from other makers.
The horrific chromatic aberration from the $5000 kit lens (seen in raw images) is a surprise.  So it's from a DNG through ACR, and apparently no CA correction made, but looks to me like 20 pixels of so wide.  It's not what I'd have expected from Leica, or from any maker at that price.

For that price (no doubt closer to NZ$20k for the body lens combination, I'd be hoping for leading edge performance.
The Sony A7IIR with Zeiss lens totally obliterates the SL.

If you want a favourable review of the Leica, wait for Michael Reichmann / Luminous Landscape.  I'm sure he'll write something gushing - but won't make direct comparisons to cameras a fraction of the price which outperform it.
He's too biased for me, I suspect he's on Leica's payroll.

Or maybe not, since he was complaining that he still had not even seen one yet and others have. Even Steve Huff...!

I'm still not sure DPR is a very valid source to be honest. I don't believe that their technique is up to scratch or that they are without bias since Amazon acquired the site. See Ming Thein's review for a fairly balanced look and some useful real world images.
