Looking at buying a new camera.

What stands out to me above other parallel importers is their terms and conditions on Warranty is basically NZ/local, it in fact states NZ warranty.

Yep - probably about 18 months ago I tried to buy a camera through them. They happily took my money, and then decided that they didn't have any in stock and couldn't get me that particular model so offered a lower spec alternative. I got my money back after a bit of hassling, less a minor transaction fee, and vowed never to try buying through them again.

Thats a shame. My aussie mates all seem to have had a good experience. We get totally ripped off for cameras in NZ both new and second hand.

For example currency wise the nikon d5500 is $240 cheaper in Australia rignt now than NZ and thats not even taking into account $50 cashback.

Then you go on Trademe, a guy has had a d5300 for 18 months and wants $300 more than what its worth new, and thats the lowst price.

We really do get screwed either way.

Reminds me of the time I went to Aus, bought a DSLR for a deal, got tax redemption at the Aussie airport with the receipts. By the time I got back home the money I saved almost paid for the flights themselves.

haha there is some medication i have to take here in NZ, that the government no longer subsidises which is nuts as its very common. costs me $5 in Aus for 3 months, cossts me $600 here. Lets keep pumping that housing bubble though.

I've heard less than favourable things about them in the past, and on that basis have stayed away.

In fact, generally I now will only look at parallel imported products where the company is NZ-based, partly due to CGA coverage (sure, an o/s company may offer comparable warranty terms, but you've no power to enforce this) and also as many of them appear to play in quite a dodgy area regarding duty and GST, even on products where such charges would otherwise be due. The NZ-based companies also often have physical stores, an actual phone number you can call etc, which provides me a with a certain level of peace of mind. (Accepting the risk that if they go bust there'll be no coverage, hence why I purchase from companies which have been around a while.)

Typically, I'm finding the price of the NZ-based companies isn't too much greater than the off-shore based sites, with the difference being negligible if for business purposes (as the dodgy ones can't provide GST invoices as no GST has been paid, so no ability to claim this component back). Eg my wife's buying me a Gear S2 for my birthday: she bought it from Parallel Imported for $460 including shipping, whereas the cheapest o/s-based shops have it for $450 or $470. Similarly, the G4 she's buying for her business is about $560 including shipping from the o/s based sites (including Becextech), and $621 from an NZ-based shop, with the ability to claim the GST.

Oh thought Becextech had a NZ store/office hence fixing faults in NZ not sent back to HK etc.

Well if thats the case NZ is getting raked over the coles for camera prices comapred to Aus.

In an Aussie store the D5500 is $750 after cash back, here the price is $1100 at Auckland Camera.

Thats a nice little holiday in price difference. Surely its not just currency rates at the moment. Does our government heavily Tax items like cameras?

Not trying to stir up a hive just trying to get to the bottom of the dramatic price difference.
