What to do with empty printer cartridges?

Does anyone know what to do with empty Canon PIXMA cartridges? As in, do they simply go into rubbish, or is there a recycling programme for them?

The Canon website talks about a recycling programme, but it's simply their Australian content under .nz domain, so none of it is relevant to New Zealand. I've sent them an email - haven't heard back.

Any ideas?

In my opinion, printer cartridges are a rip-off where plain old ink is sold at the same price as gold. (slight exaggeration here).

I attempted to use a continuous ink feed system for a Canon Pixma, but it was not very successful in that Canon managed to encapsulate the cartridges in such a way that I couldn't feed the supply tubes into the cartridges. So I bought a Brother printer with an ink tank system that could be refilled. Much more economical, and no empty cartridge issues. Check out Melco Technologies. If you use significant amounts of ink, then the initial outlay will be well worth it. (about $100 for 400ml of ink + cartridge, thereafter $12 per 100ml)

No, not using much ink at all. I'm actually happy paying for new cartridges. Well, not happy, but ok with it. My only question is how to best get rid of them.
