We have taken a photo of our cat and want to put into a frame which should take a photo with a 6.5 cm width and 9.0 cm height.

I've downloaded some software e.g. IrfanView, but because I need to take into account the aspect ratio, I cannot get a photo with good proportions.

Plus, I have never used it before.

The original, taken on my mobile is 5312 pixels width, 2988 pixels height. 72dpi.

Any suggestions, and is it even possible, based upon what the frame will take?

Would you be happy for the photo so be horizontal?,

At the moment you are wanting to fit a landscape photo ( longer wide than high) into a portrait frame (higher than it is wide)

The only way you can do this is to take a small portrait section from the landscape shot and then expand it to fit the frame, this means you will have to crop out lots of the photo

The only real way to make it fit better is to have the frame horizontal

Hi - this should be very doable on your printer, but the main thing to consider is whether the shape of the cat in the image will suit the finished format of the frame.

I haven't used Irfanview, so not sure what sort of editing tools it may have, but there should be an option to select (or set your own) print sizes in the printer software. If it doesn't have the option to crop your photo to the exact frame size you may have to choose the longest dimension, make a print and then trim down the width of the print to match the frame... hopefully that makes sense.

Maybe put image into MS Word, right click 'Size and Position' then try print.

If you put the photo into MS Word or PowerPoint, you can easily control the size. & if you wanted to print on special phto paper, you could also set up a custom page size.

On Windows 7 you had the PhotoViewer that gave you options for printing at a specific size.

I am not aware of anything out of the box on Windows that will do that for you.

Perhaps you would post the original image (with the cat’s face obscured of course) to show the issue you are dealing with.

In the meantime have a look at the following commands under the Edit menu in IRFanView with a view to applying them in the order below:
Create custom selection (allows you to set a Custom aspect ratio to match the aspect ratio of your picture frame)
Create maximized selection
If result not as desired, go back to Create custom selection and modify the size/position of the selection while maintaining the aspect ratio (instructions are in the Create custom selection window)
Auto-crop borders

I only know how to do it in photoshop, which basically you would use the crop tool with an aspect ratio equal to that specified - remember to allow for whatever the frame will take in the bleed when working it out, and then resize the image with resample unticked so it will give you a new DPI in the image to match what size you specify, then print it from in photoshop.

You can get a free trial of photoshop, otherwise I assume all the free software that copies photoshop will have something similar in it.

Important thing is you need to measure the actual paper size the frame needs and allow for the part you dont see when doing the crop so the picture sits in the right place.

It's a 2.5x3.5" 'Wallet Size' (half a 5x7)

So when printing you may also find a scaling setting in the driver/software for 'wallet' that could help with just a rotate (and select crop setting during)
