Seen a lot of RC car videos using GoPro's onboard, and the footage is pretty damn stable, yet looking at the setup when they do close up shots of the RC going by, there dosent seem to be anything special about the mount etc that would compensate for the "rough" ride.

Slapped my GoPro on my RC, and I felt sick watching if afterwards :D

How do they get away with such steady footage ? Is my Go Pro 4 Black camera just too old and is missing some fancy wizardry ? :)

Yes, the newer models have improved on stabilisation, and it gets better with each release.

Yeap internal gyro, like used in larger SLRs. And a bit of AI cropping too I think.

I did a quasi smooth in shotcut. It basically crops the frame in a % and then uses each frame to find a matching pair a few either side of semi static scene and smooth it out. Works.. kinda.

But a small RC would likely be a bit much

I think it's all digital stabilization from the 6 on? I don't think there is any optical stabilization in them.

But yeah either film in 4:3 crop and stabilize in post, or let one of the newer ones do the hard work.

It also depends where you mount it too, hopefully somewhere semi stable!

How does HyperSmooth work?
With our advanced scene analysis and roller shutter correction algorithm, our camera is able to proactively look at how motion is happening frame to frame and adjust correction to make the video super smooth. This is achieved through an increase of the camera's processing memory (not to be confused with SD card recording memory). We use an advanced roller shutter correction algorithm

Here I was thinking there was a tiny bit of CMOS shift inline work going on.

Yeah the newest versions, 8 and 9 have truly spectacular correction. In good light. In low light, they all struggle. Which unfortunately is where I do most of my riding! I have a gimbal now but really haven't had a chance to test it other than briefly earlier this year

Its an off road truck, so lot of vibration etc - even with software adjustments, dont think it'll be enough :)

Guess I'll have to get my on road car going and use that instead ;)

I have a GoPro Hero 7 White, which has similar stabilisation to the 3/4/5, which gives me OK footage when chest mounted and mountain biking.

Comparing that to footage I have seen of similar riding from a Hero 8/9 with Hypersmooth, it's like watching drone footage. Mounted on my handlebars, my footage is almost unwatchable.

That's probably the only way you're going to get that silky smooth footage you're after, but unfortunately, it also has a trade-off with things like jumps almost disappearing in the footage, as it's stabilised to the point of looking like flight.
