Another option might be an APAD netbook. Has anyone experience of these things?
I'm reluctant to consider them, for the simple reason that I already have a laptop, an iPad and a smartphone and the netbook would only be used for SDHC-to-HDD transfers. Between the above devices, I should be able to get what I want without having to buy yet another piece of hardware.

I take a Digital wallet if I'm going for away for extended periods, and taking a truck load of photo's.
Mine is an older one, but still does the job. The biggest advantage is that it has it's own battery, so I can offload all of the images to the digital wallet without needing a laptop or power plug. It has a basic screen, an array of card slots, and a Mini USB socket to allow charging of the internal battery and to access the data.
Mine only cost a few dollars for the case + the cost of the laptop HDD. They were so cheap, I take two away and offload the SD card data to both of them (just in case one poops itself).
Thanks Spearsniper. I've seen these with HDDs already installed and they seemed ridiculously overpriced for the given capacity, but I've not seen them naked, so to speak. If I can't get the external dock working with my android phone, it's something I'd definitely consider.
