alasta: I have my eye on the Nikon 85mm DX Micro and I'm going to buy it when I'm in Australia in a couple of weeks because with the GST reclaimed it'll end up costing me about $700 (just below the threshold to avoid attracting GST upon re-entry to NZ) versus $1150 at my preferred photographic retailer in Christchurch.
That price difference will almost pay for my flights to and from Australia, although interestingly the price difference is nowhere near that much when I look at a couple of the other lenses that I'm potentially interested in.

I thought the GST threshold way $400? It is for stuff shipped in.
jfanning:alasta:
It's $700 according to this page.
That is a combined $700

If I understand correctly that won't be a problem as I won't be bringing in anything else.
At the end of the day I'll just suck it up in the unlikely event that I do get charged. It's not worth losing sleep over.

You won't have a problem with just a $700 lens.
The "personal goods concession" that applies to people travelling is $700 but effectively $1099 it the items are only subject to GST (i.e. no duty).
It is $1099 because they work out what you charge you by subtracting $700 from the value of the goods. Then then work out the GST (and duty if applicable) on the excess. If it works out to be less than $60 then they don't charge you.
timmmay: I won't buy anything than OEM lenses any more, ie Nikon lenses on Nikon bodies, Canon lenses on Canon bodies. I've had too many problems with Sigma lenses not focusing properly. I had a Tamron 28-75 which wasn't bad, but the Canon 17-55 was a definite upgrade.
