I bought the the Canon EFS 15-85 IS USM for my 550d body and the time I was concerned that the zoom would be too short vrs ?-105 but in reality I didnt miss the longer zoom at all.

I also got the cheap canon 70-300 IS USM at the same time because I thought I would need a longer zoom but it reality I've probably taken less than 50 photos with the longer zoom vrs 7000 with the other lens.

Sweet thanks all for the suggestions. Ya I thought getting an 17-50 F2.8 would increase the quality of the photos and allow me to snap faster pictures (action type shots in low light conditions). But I will carry on through with my current set of lenses for the time being in that case.

I do have my 50mm which is plenty fast but it isnt a good multi purpose lens which is pretty much the main reason for me starting this thread, to find a good multi purpose lens that i can use instead of the kit.

We all desire 'the one lens to rule them all' but sadly, it doesn't happen. Which is why we all end up pennyless and an assortment of specialist ones

However check out the new sigma rumor that was released today in reality ;) 24-105 F4 stabilised - its in the range you were looking at heh

I have accumulated a few now and some of them don't venture out of the bag

18-55 v1 kit (from old 350)
55-200 1st ed (from same kit)

just playing devil's advocate
- if you want to shoot action photos in low light - does the lens-body combo allow you a quick auto focus or is it going to search around for half a minute and then give up?
- if you shoot wide open is the sharpness going to be hopeless? (how does the lens do 2 stops short of wide open?)

i have a canon 50mm f/1.8 and a 600D ... it cannot focus well at low light LOL (takes forever and even then it's a hit and miss if it eventually focusses)

Not a lot can save us from that other than sumulated exposure and extreme ISO. That's what pre-flash fire, find something nearby reflecting light or best guess manual based on DoF calculations are for

I have a couple of weddings to photograph over the next couple of months and started looking at some new lenses again:
Considering between:

Canon 70-200 F4 IS
Sigma 70-200 F2.8 OS
Tamron 70-200 F2.8 VC

Basically I would like to keep the new lens under a budget of 1.5k. The Canon from all the reviews I have read is an awesome lens. But at the same time, the sigma and the tamron have also got decent reviews.

My question to anyone out here is that, since they are all around the same price, how does the image quality of the canon compare to the other 2 - I know that since the Tamron and Sigma are F2.8, they will perform a bit better in low light. But having said that, is the trade off between the fine optics of the canon and the 2 stops worth it?

Would like to know if anyone has tried any 2 of these 3 lenses. What was your experience? I am shooting a couple of Indian weddings (lots and lots of colours going to at the wedding) if that helps.

F2.8 - F4 is one stop not two. If all you want is the reach then sure, get the F4, I do prefer OEM lenses not third party. Modern cameras are great at high ISO, but you'll get more depth of field. You'll also struggle a bit more in low light like churches, but in general in NZ in summer you'll be ok with F4 - you may just be at ISO6400.

Read reviews of the lens, but beware that once someone buys something some will post reviews to justify their purchase, telling people it's awesome even if it's rubbish.

I kinda agree. I do mainly landscapes, if you haven't get and use that tripod and you will be at ISO 100. You can shoot the lens at F8 or F11 sweetspot even the cheap lenses. For landscapes get a really wide lens now that I assume you have the kit lens already. I dunno, I guess pro's get 2.8 lenses for low light if they need a zoom as well that may be justifiable but for a hobbyist it is just ONE stop from 2.8 to 4.0. If you want low light what about a 85mm F1.8? For likes of $300-400USD?

For your $1,500 I guess even a 70-200 F4 USM IS may even be an option it is different to your lens - diff perspectives and it gives you image stabiliser that is if want to shoot handheld.
