However, I pointed out to TA Mac (who went very quiet...) that if Nikon USA accepted that 5 years was a reasonable warranty, it was likely that fact could be used as evidence to claim the same thing under the Consumer Guarantees Act here in NZ....

TAMac are a bit ess aitch one tee I am afraid. Sadly we do not have a proper Nikon presence here in NZ, unlike Canon. So for example we have no access to Nikon Professional Services here for those of us that make a living with Nikon stuff.

Doesn't your making a living with the Nikon gear mean that the Consumer Guarantees Act doesn't apply?

If you purchase for commercial use then you are still covered by the Sale Of Goods Act 1908 which is very similar but doesn't specify some of the remedies as precisely, for example it might be harder to argue "merchantable quality" but "fitness for purpose" I think is similar.

Time to find a new industry!

I can't help but wonder if an Act from 1908 is rather in need of modernisation...!!

So after much deliberation and procrastination, I've changed my mind multiple times and finally ordered a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens from Photo Warehouse...

IMHO at least, they seemed to have a better selection of lenses than the other sites recommended here and this particular one is on special at the moment so the price is comparable to parallel import sites etc...

I'm expecting delivery Wednesday presuming they have it in stock, but havent had confirmation of anything from them just yet...

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

Photo warehouse is reputable. The 50 F1.8 is a nice lens, I use it for weddings quite happily, it does a good job. Be careful at F1.8, it's a very narrow DOF on full frame.
