...Photo and Video (Chch) has for a while listed various Nikkor lenses at more competitive prices - but "Indent" (IOW not ex local stock held by the agent). ...

What does "indent" and "IOW" mean please? Parallel imported?

IOW - "In Other Words".

"Indent" is (was?) "special order" (usually from overseas) as opposed to ex-stock.  I doubt Photo and Video would do parallel importing.  However, as this wording had been used on their price lists for a while - something may have been up with at least one major retailer, Nikon, and TA Mac. before the announcement.
Photo and Video are a good, well established photo store - no doubt getting hammered on price by both parallel import businesses, and private imports via the web locally.
I note they have the following comment on their site:
"Due to a change in NZ Nikon distribution, some items are unavailable for a short time, please contact us for availability prior to ordering."

Indent usually means it is an item rarely requested which even the distributor has to order in - as opposed to stock which sells well and is held in NZ most of the time. Obscure lenses and accessories would usually be indent, for example.

I'll second P&V as being a good store. Them and Progear in Auckland are IMV the two best ones in NZ.

Thanks Geektastic. NBR have this article (behind a paywall so I can't read it):
"After 50-year partnership, Nikon shopping for new distributor"
http://www.nbr.co.nz/article/lay-offs-expected-nikons-sole-distributor-loses-rights-vy-p-163386

I wonder what that means for warranties? I registered recently for the 3 year warranty on my DSLR kit. The webpage now says it's not available now:  "NIKON 3 YEAR WARRANTY REGISTRATION IS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE"
http://www.nikonnzwarranty.co.nz/

timmmay: I bought half of my Nikon kit from the US. I got the other half from NZ once Nikon decided to make prices more reasonable, for a while NZ was almost double the US.

Camera prices in New Zealand were very overpriced before parallel importing forced them down. If the Trans Pacific Partnership the government wants to sign bans it again we can expect large increases in "New Zealand new" prices for cameras and some other electronics.

This was only a few years ago, well after parallel importing was done. It was just Nikon keeping local prices high. They just happened to drop between when I bought my first Nikon, for testing, and when I bought the rest of my kit.

Prices never equalised with parallel imported products after they arrived, but if not for the alternative they provided, the New Zealand new prices would've stayed far higher. Parallel importing changes the maths which is why companies want to have it banned.

Nikon announces New Zealand distribution partnership with Lacklands LP

Nikon is delighted to announce a new partnership responsible for the promotion, sales and distribution of Nikon Imaging Products within New Zealand.

Lacklands LP has been appointed as Nikon Distributor by Nikon Australia, and staff shall commence support of Nikon Imaging and Sports Optic products effective immediately in order to restore efficient distribution throughout New Zealand.

James Murray, General Manager Sales and Marketing Nikon Australia, said of the new partnership. "Lacklands has a proven track record not just distributing leading brands, but building those brands with fresh ideas and executing results through their retail partnerships."

"Nikon Australia is delighted to be working with Lacklands to introduce a new chapter and approach for Nikon and expand our availability in the country. We look forward to working with their team to drive Nikon as a market leader and positively influence the overall New Zealand imaging business from here on," added Murray.

All that will do is increase the profits of Adorama and B&H...!

When the Nikon D3 was announced, the first price announced by Nikon was NZ$15,500 or so when it was less than half that in Australia.

Not surprisingly it fell before the cameras even hit the dealers!

Until recently, Nikon offered 1 year warranty in NZ and 5 in the USA. Now it's 3 here.

However the CGA would almost guarantee that you could claim 5 on the basis that if Nikon think that is reasonable in the USA there is no reason for it not to be equally reasonable here.

This is the news article about it:

http://procounter.com.au/2014/10/06/nikons-longest-known-distributor-shuts-shop/

Geektastic:

This is mostly I believe a factor of the market penetration Canon have as well as the newcomers.

Is very sad really, given how far far behind Canon is behind Nikon, and Sony (and even Olympus, and Panasonic, etc). Every Canon photographer who recommends Canon to a newbie.... I blame you! tongue-out

Geektastic:
A well known photographic retailer I know whose business is very much orientated toward pro shooters told me yesterday that they now sell more Sony gear in a month than Canon and Nikon combined...!

I'm fairly pleased to hear that, I'm considering getting a Sony A7s myself for a feature film I'll be shooting.

Personally I am now giving very serious consideration to jumping ship to the Sony A7 system now that the A7s is released.

It offers Nikon D4s-beating full frame high ISO ability at half the weight and a third of the cost, still in a magnesium alloy weather sealed body. Plus it shoots 4K video if that floats your boat. It's 'only' 12 Mp but then again so is my Nikon D3s.

Sadly it doesn't shoot 4K internally, you need an external recorder. You'd have to get a Panasonic GH4 instead.

The Atomos Shogun (which is they recorder you'd want) is not even out yet! Not until late next month.

And even then, it will cost you US$2k! I know all this... because I'm looking into getting one myself :-/

The video bit is irrelevant to me - I never shoot it.

I had a good look at the Sony and a couple of things were not really going to work for me (the sensor was certainly not one of them though!) and I ordered the last Nikon D810 that Progear have in stock today, having sold my D3x.

OMG.  You'll have to face howls of indignation from those who sincerely believe that "nobody needs more than XXmp, the file size is crippling, you'll never see the benefit of XXmp unless you have the very best lenses/technique/always use a tripod/send all your lenses off to Nikon for calibration, there's too much noise at ISOxxxx at 100% pixel view, moire/aliasing will ruin every shot, it's too heavy, there's no wifi, slrs are obsolete / evfs are better than ovfs, Nikon live-view implementation sucks, it doesn't have a swiveling screen".  Oh - and I forgot - "I sold my D810 and Nikkors and bought a 1/4 frame Olysonic which can do everything the D810 could do, but the whole system fits in my wife's handbag".
