Both Surface displays are incredibly sharp (Surface Pro 3’s pixel density at 217 PPI and Surface 3’s at 214 PPI) and have amazing colour range and accuracy (with custom calibration in the factory)

Surface 3 screen is even brighter than Surface Pro 3, the brightest display we’ve ever shipped, better for use outdoors or under overhead lights.

But yes more than $400.

lxsw20: I would have thought Samsung OLED screens would not be giving a very accurate colour representation, they always seem way over saturated to me.

In the larger sense this is not true any longer, current gen AMOLEDs are amongst the most colour accurate displays out there. Check the displaymate reviews for the Note 4 and S6. In the phone realm these are the best screens now, period.

Samsung haven't released anything in the tablet realm with a current-gen AMOLED, so it's moot here.

For all talking points here besides the question of budget I'd fall on the Surface side of things here.

That displaymate site seems to be a software sales organisation which has wheedled it's way into some kind of fame - to the extent that it's now cited widely.

It's a garbage site full of disturbingly incorrect information which is designed to confuse and impress the unwary. I have no idea if the general conclusions about colour accuracy of the tablets tested is reasonable. No doubt click-throughs from review websites help him sell plenty of useless software to the gullible.
If you have a colorimeter, freeware is available which will allow you to use it to measure and automatically calculate Delta E (2000) - not his obscure "JNCD" claimed to have been measured to a now twice obsolete CIE 1976 standard, measured with his very impressive sounding (but otherwise not specified) "spectroradiometer".

I doubt that many people would even like the "look" of a display which was accurately colour calibrated for print matching (or painting reproduction from screen). Saturation, contrast ratio, and brightness are generally very much lower than we're "used to".

I didn't do any tests - as it's a bit pointless when user-adjustment / calibration could have a major impact on accuracy, and if you're doing something critical, then relying on test for "out of box" accuracy is probably pointless as there will probably be unit to unit variation, and the user should calibrate it properly anyway.

I looked at a Surface Pro 3 (SWMBO's) and MBP Retina (the young gremlin's) side by side yesterday, subjective viewing of test images.
Both look extremely good, there's no difference which hits you in the face as "better". But the surface pro at default settings is better (IMHO) when viewing test images. Black levels are slightly less crushed, white levels at 254 show against a 255 background, but fade out beyond about 252 on the MBP. While I don't trust gamma test images, the pro 3 seemed to be close to target at approx 2.2, the MBP appeared to be low (1.8 or so) - the Pro 3 was probably more accurate, but it's still subjective as to what "looks better".
I'd never bothered to look at the Pro 3 critically - I thought it was a bit of a toy. But it seems to be an exceptionally well made piece of kit. SWMBO left the stylus at work. She tells me it's dead accurate - Wacom style. I want to try that too now. I think I want one.

Yes - but there will be colour shift as the back-light LEDs age.

Great blacks on the Tab S. I have the Tab S 10.5, 8.4 and the Surface Pro 3. It took a bit of getting used to with the Surface Pro 3 but I am convinced it the future of mobile computing. Soooo flexible. Run anything. Great screen, fast.
