Imagine if the OP asks for a $1000 laptop and the response is a 8GB/16GB machine with SSD and i7 Haswell

...which might not be an issue for the OP's needs (used connected to an external monitor etc plugged in to mains, battery life probably not an issue, still image processing - unless batch-processing a stack of files - is very CPU intensive for short duration only - so heat won't be an issue, build quality/ruggedness/compact size not as critical as for someone using a notebook as a portable device).

Using Lightroom on an HP is going cause heating issues, the brand is prone to overheating especially it's consumer ranges. It has been my experience that these suffer serious overheating issues with only moderate use. If one is going to use a HP Laptop it is better to punt for
one of the enterprise models.

laptops designed to be slim and sexy are never going to have good ventilation as a priority at design stage. they are usually low powered CPU products that have received a turbo charger. lightroom 5 is NOT CPU intensive at all, and maxes out around 50-70% (can't remember) when exporting files. LR 6 maxes at 100% while encoding files. the rest of the time the CPU is not stressed for too long. unless you have about 10+ effects painted on, then it will struggle a bit. those mods are better suited for photoshop.

the important thing to look for in a laptop for LR is
1) screen size - you can't see anything on a small screen
2) screen resolution - full HD is best. too low no good too high the stress is higher on the CPU without much gain (your eyes can only see that much)
3) touch pad. most of the time you are on the touch pad. get one with wobbly makeshift pad or a small sized pad and you are in a world of pain. mouse is better.
4) SSD - that is probably the biggest improvement in performance you will get
5) 8GB RAM is enough, more is always better but I rarely see my LR use more than a handful of GB even with 1000 files open

the keyword to search is "gaming laptop". a proper one looks chunky (for ventilation), but they are more expensive than your budget.

Might be a good idea to check out some desktops actually - you would get a lot more power from a 1000 desktop then a laptop. Any reason you are not considering a desktop?
