The reporter that took this picture eventually committed suicide after the out-lash from the public.
Disgusting. How can a human photograph such a thing, surely its human nature to help.

Refugees are people in very bad situations.

On the other hand if you were in Victoria, there would not be a single week go by that you don't hear of Somali gang fights (involving machetes) resulting in serious injury. It turns out these refugees, usually teens when they were granted stay in Australia, had brought their way of life, weapons, gang wars from Somalia to Melbourne.

I think this is the issue when discussing the opening of borders to refugees.

A baby dying on the beach is heartbreaking - especially seeing this as a parent.
BUT...as was said above, often people from a war-torn country often have ways of surviving and would be hard-pressed to forget that way of living, even in a new country.
When you think about the situation that many of them find themselves in after being admitted to a new country as a refugee, many of these people (while leaving the danger and poverty behind) are marginalised and left as social outcasts, so they fall back into the patterns of old.

Scary but unfortunately a fact of life.

Refugees are people in very bad situations.

The photographer committed suicide at a time after he had received some criticism about the circumstances in which that photograph was taken, but it's unacceptable to imply - as you seem to have done - that this was the reason for his suicide. His suicide note suggests that his situation was much more complex than you imply.

Photojournalists who find themselves in this situation do face a moral dilemna. If there's a "greater good" to be achieved, then it's hardly disgusting. The "sanitised version" of the news surely can be disgusting. The publishing of such photos always results in politically motivated response or backlash.

On the other hand, repeated exposure to such images might anaesthetise emotion. You don't need to look hard to see what people desensitised to such horror are capable of, even if it's just sitting back and doing nothing. Care is needed.

The photographer won a Pulitzer prize.

A note from his diary:

“Dear God, I promise I will never waste my food no matter how bad it can taste and how full I may be. I pray that He will protect this little boy, guide and deliver him away from his misery. I pray that we will be more sensitive towards the world around us and not be blinded by our own selfish nature and interests. I hope this picture will always serve as a reminder to us that how fortunate we are and that we must never ever take things for granted.”

For those who are interestested in the picture about the starving child and vulture could read The bang bang club.
Which chronicles the experiences of 4 photo journalists who covered the violence in the black townships in early 1990's.
Two of whom subsequently die. One in the townships and once by suicide (the one who took that photo at a feeding centre

On Wednesday Government support partners UnitedFuture, ACT and the Maori Party spoke out against National's reluctance to lift the quota with UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne saying the Government had "got it wrong". There was a strong case for lifting New Zealand's annual refugee quote to at least 1000 and the Government should also consider an emergency response to the mounting refugee numbers in Europe, he said.
