Further to my earlier comment - the Canon R seems to be the only mirrorless atm to have a shutter that closes over the sensor when changing lenses (camera has to be turned off), and hence protects from dust, salt spray, etc.

In Wellington there's a retail store - Wgtn Photographic Supplies that rents out various camera gear - they may have a mirrorless camera or two to rent. In Auck there are a few places to try for rental gear - Kingsize Studios or White Studios are a couple I can think of.

Cheers,

Don't get the EOS R, that sensor is only as good as the 5d4 which isn't as good as the newer A7/R III or even the A7R II while you may as well get a A7R III and use something like a sigma mc-11 to convert your old canon lenses to the sony mount since you have to invest in a bunch of new lenses anyway.

Also it doesn't have IBIS which is basically what made the 5Ds/R's extra resolution useless in most of the situations.

The Sony offering looks ok namely The A6300. What folks thoughts on these?

I ordered a Canon EOS 5D today but I am still looking at mirrorless cameras for a backup for travelling and when I don't want to lug around a heavy camera

I bought in to the Olympus/MFT environment a little over three years ago. Relatively small, light and fully waterproof. Great for any kind of travel. At least, it works for me.

We have a Sony Alpha 57 we bough about 7 years ago. It hasn't done a tremendous amount of work but we've been very happy with it. We bought it partly for video work and the fact it could continue to focus while recording (a feature of the mirrorless system).

I have not considered Olympus, I forgot about them. Had a look at them this morning in JBs they look and feel good. I like the retro look of the silver ones. Will need to check reviews

IMO (still only a beginner-intermediate photographer but have a partner who's really into it along with a number of friends) and judging from the experience of those who have started and given up, way too many people focus on perceived image quality and so forth of a camera and forget about things like handling and comfort. If you don't like how a camera handles, find it hard to get the right settings for the shot that you want, and generally just find it a pain to carry the thing because it's too large or whatever, everything else is a waste of time. And you need to get the right camera for your kind of photography. For example, if you do street photography, you'd be far better off with a more discrete mirrorless or even micro 4/3s camera, as opposed to a big fat DSLR that just screams "I am taking photos. Avoid me if you don't want to accidentally offer a candid shot!".

If you aren't sure that the Canon is for you, depending on where you bought it from, most places will take back something unopened and give you store credit. Or even take bit of a loss if you must and can afford it and just flick it on Trademe. It's far more important to have a camera that you genuinely love.

I settled on the Olympus E-M1 (Mark 1) as it was comfortable to hold and use, and reviews were good. Now also have an E-M5 II. Definitely worth trying them all out for size etc in a camera shop if you can. (Not hearing good things about Panasonic's post-warranty servicing, just FYI. Not needed it for my Olympus gear, but hear it's good, should I ever require it.)

The guy at cameralabs.com is a big fan of mirrorless cameras - worth spending some time reading his reviews.

@dejadeadnz thanks again for great advice. I slept on it and talked with my wife. She said we can still buy the Canon and she will use it as she wants to join me in photography. So that is good.
