bfginger: Nearly all devices able to scan 35mm film do a poor to very poor job at it. People just don't care about quality. High quality film scanners are out of production due to lack of demand except for the eye wateringly expensive units like the $20,000 unit Zeon has lucky access to ;)

Unless you're willing to spend thousands of dollars or Zeon is happy to scan 1,000 slides for you ;), the Epson V700 is probably going to be your best option.

The only obvious alternative is the Plustek OpticFilm 7600i Ai

or to snap photos of the slide with a dSLR and an attachment.

I have heard good things about the plustek, and was thinking about getting one myself. After you have used it, you can also sell it.

The thing about sending them off to be done 'professionally' is that you don't know how good the quality will be, and they will probably not do any photo editing, unless you pay a lot more.

Nearly all scanning services either use non professional equipment, scan at low-resolution to save time, or overcharge something terrible. $200 for a roll of film is excessive.

HI Camden,

I have a similar set of slides (taken in a block about 30 - 35 yrs ago). Got a cheap scanner to do the work, and threw it in the bin in disgust (the best attempts so far are in my FLICKR / Silverstack account).

Saw another post from you about getting a Macro lens - go down that track first, as it might save you money if you can jury rig a copier together.

Once again, thankyou for all your suggestions, advice and comments. Shortly I will be buying a 40mm macro lens for my DSLR and I am going to make up a rig to enable me to copy all the old family photos etc and I am going to experiment in an attempt to copy slides held in a frame in front of the camera lens.Maybe have to use an extention tube as well as the macro lens.
Summer time is outdoor activity time like boating and fishing, mountain biking and photography etc and this copying project is a good indoor hobby for the colder days to come! I will post back when I have some results of my experiments.
Regards
Camden
